The Ironclad era is totally neglected by kit manufacturers. I would love airfix to make a kit of HMS Warrior, especially considering they have the real thing to clamber over, but never mind....

If you consider 'wargaming' models, in 1/2000 scale Red Eagle Models (ex-Triton) make a HMS Minotaur class model.

Incidentally, I never realized until now that Agincourt's hulk survived at Sheerness until 1960- almost a centenarian.

regards,

Will

I would have thought that a small kit of the Warrior would sell really well at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. Airfix would then market their Mary Rose, Victory and the Warrior as separate kits or as a gift set. I can't see how they could fail to sell to the tourist market.

We visited the Hartlepool Maritime Experience last Saturday, the first time I've been since (IIRC) 1997. I remember thinking back then that, as Airfix already had the moulds for a Leda class frigate in the shape of HMS Shannon, the shop would surely be able to sell a batch of this simple and cheap kit if it was rebranded as HMS Trincomalee. It wouldn't even need new box art, as it wasn't of the blood and thunder variety but just portrayed Shannon peaceably sailing into port exchanging gun salutes. Sadly, I guess the marketing people's assessment must be that it wouldn't be worth their while. Presuming they've considered it, and they probably have, given that Airfix kits are sold in quite a few museums.

I'ld quite like a kit of Warrior as well. The first time I went to Hartlepool (1986?) it was to see the ship still undergoing restoration before being towed to Portsmouth - where I went aboard again a few years later.

I probably have plans and A3 lithograph(s) of HMS Warrior - I don't think I have a card kit - but I can have a look if anyone is still interested or might be prepared to scratch build a model in whatever medium you are comfortable with from plans.

I love ironclads (the changeover from sail to steam) and I like to build large scale models of them - I have several built and will be posting pix of them, hopefully within the next day or two - my favouries are Russian and French warships because they are so wierd - "Hoche" which I have a card kit for - don't remember buying it - and some of the other ones - a blank moment, sorry.

I have loads of plans in various sizes for ironclads - one of my favourites is Korea - a wonderful ship and I think I have a digital card kit of it - of course, I am speaking a different language to those of you who rely on plastic pre-made kits - sorry, I like to build my detail scale models out of paper compressed card and 3 to 6 feet in length, for R/C - which I never do.
