Highly recommended that you rub down the rivets before spraying on current kit...............nice to see it carried out on a 1:1 scale :gobsmacked:

That's what my rivets looked like when I did the Welding + Rivetting part of my course. May explain why I specialised on another field :)

Fuselage framesin the nose above the centreline, and all the way back to the tailwheel bay. Main and trailing spar and booms, and the undercrriage bay ribs. The wing itself got redesigned from a safe life system with 4 internal tanks in each wings, to a fail safe type with 6 internal tanks, and tip tanks - the internal tanks being removed from above rather than below as in the Lancaster derived wing. Horizontal tail and fins were the same as were the powerplants. Nacelles were different to deal with the tricycle undercarriage and Viper engines in the later MR3.

The wing on the MR3 is pretty much the one that became the Argosy's wing, the MR1 and MR2 is essentially a Lincoln.

Wasn't the MR.3 designed with a wider as well as deeper fuselage in response to aircrew complaints of cramped conditions?

Rumours say Revell's Shackleton sprues and more will be on display at the SMW 2015.

V.P.

Well the sprues were on display in Japan so i expect them at Telford as a minimun, i would expect a built example to be on display to be honest

No, the fuselage frames are the same. Thats why equipment from an MR3 will fit into an MR2 and vice versa.

There's a lot of (mis)information about, stating that the MR.3 had a larger fuselage - although there doesn't seem to be any data around to back that up. By sheer coincidence, The Avro Shackleton Story was on Movies4men a few days ago and in an interveiw with a former 8 Sqn boss, Grp. Cpt. Dave Henken, he states that "the Mk.3 was different in fuselage cross section and length".

Gp Capt Hencken was our Trust's pilot and he is correct, but his answer is misleading. The cross section is different, but only in certain places. The nose forward of the instrument panel is a different shape from the datum line down. The fuselage is again different around the tailwheel well area, as it doesn't exist on the MR3.

The length although stated as different is fairly similar too. The discrepancy is due to the AEW2 not carrying cannon and being measured tail down, against the MR3's level attitude.

I was hoping for better to be honest.

Poor, poor research, and it shows that while several museums tried to put them right, they've still gone and created some kind of franken-Shack that's all their own work.

MR3 ailerons on an MR2 shaped wing.

MR3 interior in an AEW2 (things such as the Blue Silk unit on the rear floor, and raised floor with an escape hatch for the nosewheel bay between the pilots!!))

MR3 glazed panel for the fuselage flares - a South African Air Force local modification.

Maritime trailing aerial moulded on (amongst others), when the AEW2 doesn't have one.

Faired in AEW radome, when it was an addition with a built up 'skirt' to take something non original to the aircraft.

If you want accuracy, stick with the Airfix kit.

Regards,

Rich

Could it be that these extra parts are for a MR3 boxing at the later date, would make some sort of sense with the fuselage breakdown

can't wait to get it onto the workbench, currently decaling the Airfix shack, would make a great pair.

Anyone got any updates from Revell regarding ETA, I know they were aiming for December, is this still the case?

I've just this moment taken a break from doing decals on the airfix kit, and looking at the pictures I'm starting to get more excited about this one.

I'ld love to be able to weather my kits like that

I would hazard a guess that Revell have considered releasing a MR3 at a later stage based on this kit. Forward cockpit section seems to be a plug in section (thin connecting sprues) and also missing parts on layout.

I've said it before, but it is interesting how that one sprue with the tail planes and fuselage (most of the fuselage anyway) are parts that could be used for both the AEW.2/MR.2 and the MR.3. Perhaps that's just wishful thinking on my part, that an MR.3 is down the road, but pleasant wishful thinking nonetheless.

Jason
