Olympic class ocean liners

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

I have for a long time been interested in the Olympic class ocean liners built by the White Star Line at the Harland & Wolff Shipyards in Belfast - Olympic, Titanic and Britannic.

Now I have built a Revell model of the Titanic, maybe considering the Olympic. I was just wondering if anyone knows if it would be possible for me to get my hands on decals for the Britannic, the 3rd ship in the class ?

I am considering making all 3 ships.

I know that my Titanic model is larger than 1:700 scale as I believe it is around 50 cm in length. The current Revell Titanic and Olympic models are made in 1:700 scales.

Can anyone suggest where I could get the decals for Britannic ?

Thanks,

Rick

Hi Rick, I don't know of any specific decals for Britannic, though others may know of some. One option could be to do the green strip with masking tape, and perhaps there are basic Red Cross decals available that would be a suitable size to go over the stripe? There's also the different lifeboat racks on Britannic to think about.

Regards,

Ross.

Hi Rick

Don't know of any specific Britannic decals, but as Ross suggests above, most of it could be done with careful masking and / or cutting out red & green decal film. The only difficult bit would be the ships name on the bow and stern.

Have you seen the Currel paper models of the class? 1200 scale but there's enough detail to upscale to 700 to reference the changes required for Britannic. Britannic, Olympic and Titanic My build of the Olympic is here and a useful Britannic reference book here

The old Revell is supposed to be about 1/540. It was considered "box scale" coz it was designed to fit the box rather than be of a regular scale.

Olympic & Britannic were closer sisters than Titanic was. Most changes were in the Bridge area, & upper deck levels. Obviously more lifeboats were included after 1912!

Academy's new multi coloured plastic kit is very nice, but the big Revell 1/400 is inaccurate. The funnels are oval instead of rounded, the hull is 'odd' & there are numerous smaller errors across the board....

There IS an specific Olympic kit by Revell but i don't have any experience with it.

Britannic has a lot more changes with regard to the upper deckhouses, the BFO davits and the aft well deck. There was a resin and brass set to convert the Academy 350th kit but they've been unavailable for a few years.

Mark Chirnside's "The Olympic Class Ships" is an excellent reference.

Thanks guys,

I knew there were lots of changes to the britannic as I have read a lot of books and watched a lot of documentaries about the 3 ships.

Before I can even think about building these 3, I want to complete some of my other builds which I want to do first.

Wooksta, I will add that to my amazon wish list for if and when I do try to go ahead with these builds.

Cheers,

Rick

The Olympic is out in 1/700 scale and was thought to be released in 1/350 scale to match the Titanic but alas never happened ,

It would be nice if someone would release the parts need to change the Titanic to Britannic/Olympic as i would like models of these magnificent ships

I just wish someone would re release the Rms Lusitania as well

A shelf of 1/350 4 funnelled liners would be impressive

I might get rid if some of my Panzers to make space for that

Rick

The Britannic had these davits at the rear they did not replace the existing davits on a one to one I think it was four each side not eight

Just checked it was two per side not four

My apolgies for any confusion

It is actually 3 pairs on starboard side. One pair on starboard side of the forward funnel plus two pairs on both sides abaft the aft funnel. Check this image

I did the three conversions to some Revell 1:1200 scale Titanic kits a while back (nice and cheap project), although I did overdo it with the sea base somewhat; however, lessons learned.

That dazzle scheme on Olympic looks fantastic! Not sure I could pull it off though!

The Revell 1/700 Olympic is a surprisingly subtle kit. Looks very nice in the box, haven't built one yet. There are some decent aftermarket items for it, namely a comprehensive Tom's Modelworks set and Artwox do a wood deck. I don't have it to hand, but I don't know if the TM set includes any extra parts for Britannic.
