activexp
I fancied a change from bikes and cars so this Unimog from Revell caught my eye as something different. It's a rebox of an 80's kit and it shows in the amount of soft detail.
MetroRacing
Oooooo I'll be watching this one with interest. I have the Dakar rally version in the stash.
richellis
Cool, I've a Unimog in the stash and have a plan for it (its not the fire truck) but our local station have one just like this but with a crane for use on the chase. Watching this build!
activexp
Made a start on the engine, only 4 parts and a lot of soft detail which I've tried to pick out. Finished off with a black wash to give it a used look. Engine cooling appears to be absent from the kit.
activexp
A little progress on the chassis. Engine, gearbox, exhaust, front springs and axle fitted. Only issue here was that I'd cemented the springs slightly too close to the sides of the chassis which resulted in the locating pins on the axle not engaging with the corresponding holes on the springs. Solved by removing the pins
MetroRacing
Looking good. From what I remember of the instructions the placement of some suspension and interior parts are a little vague.

activexp
More work on the chassis. Back axle fitted. Learning from the experience with the front, took extra care with test fits. Went together with no problems.
MetroRacing
Do I spy unpainted black plastic? I hope so, I don't want to be the only one haha. so far so good mate. Ashley
activexp
You're right, you do see unpainted black plastic This may change later in the build, honest
MetroRacing
Nooooo! I don't bother painting black plastic unless it's clearly on show. Don't let me be the only one pmsl haha
activexp
Exactly! If it's visible it will be painted, usually, otherwise no point. So you aren't the only one
MetroRacing
Great. Now that that's cleared up. Any more progress on the mog? Lol
activexp
Getting there slowly, lots of flash and badly moulded parts that need cleaning up. The kit sure shows its age Hope to have an update real soon.
activexp
Finally got the chassis finished, just needs some tidying up here and there. Next stage, the cab.
MetroRacing
Looking even better. Can't wait for the body to go on. Ashley
activexp
Made a start on the cab interior. I'm not sticking rigidly to the colour callouts in the instructions - too much black! The mounting of the accelerator pedal was rather odd as there's no visible locating point so I had to drill a small hole for it. Progress will be a little slow as I'm waiting for paint to cure. MetroRacing
Those seats look great. However I wouldn't like to sit in them lol.

activexp
Body panels prepared and waiting for the paint to fully cure before assembly. This will be my last post for a while as I'm taking a break
activexp
Back from my break and on with the build. The paint on the panels has cured sufficiently to prepare for assembly of the body. The cab shell is almost complete, wing mirrors and spotlight to fit later. The fit of the opening doors isn't great and lack interior handles and winders. It's also a little disappointing that the locating tabs on the windscreen are clearly visible. Unfortunately I'm missing a part, one headlight lens. I hoped it might be loose in the bag but no sign of it anywhere so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Revell can supply a replacement.
MetroRacing
ah-ha good to have you back. Build still looking good It is a shame about the window tabs hmm would painting a black surround work? I'd just glued the doors shut lol Not sure if Revell supply parts for kits out of production which I think this is now. Ashley
activexp
I've used a black surround but the tabs are so wide that to hide them entirely, the lines would be quite thick and look rather 'heavy' and wrong Better news about the doors. After fitting the cab to the floor pan it's all got pulled together improving the general fit, not perfect but no large gaps. Revell have confirmed my missing part request, no notification that it's unavailable, yet. Still keeping my fingers crossed!
MetroRacing
You've got me wondering about my rally unimog now lol. Problem is its at the bottom of my newly organised stash Fingers crossed on the replacement Ashley
