DaveJL
Hello all, Here is one of my entries for this GB: Eduards 1/48 F-4B 'Good Morning Da Nang' marked as 152238 of VMFA-542 'Bengals', USMC, Da Nang Air Base, South Vietnam, 1965. This particular jet flew over 100 missions and was transferred to VMFA-323 before being lost to AAA fire in 1967. Kit: ] Aftermarket: Will be using True Details Mk 77 napalm canisters, Quickboost FOD covers and (although the Eduard Brassin seats are nice), Quickboost seats (no etch!). Kit will be fully loaded: 12x MK-82 bombs, 4x MK-77 napalm canisters, 2x AIM-9B Sidwinders, 2x 2 shot Zuni rocket pods (pinched from a Hasegawa Crusader), 2x AIM-7 Sparrows and 1x fuel tank. Always wanted to build a USMC F-4 in the CAS role so here's the perfect excuse I may also add the aforementioned Hasegawa Crusader…VF-211 Mig killer. snapper_city
Looking forward to this Dave. I have the Good evening Da Nang in the stash so will be very interested to see how this builds. Liking the bomb load..

Dr Evil
One quick point, the Bengals bird in '65 would have been fitted with a Mk 5 seat as available from Hypersonic, I'd have to check but am pretty sure they only started retrofitting Mk 7's in '66/67. DaveJL
Cheers. Is there much difference in appearance between them?
Dr Evil
There isn't a huge amount of difference, but the most obvious to me is the metal casing around the upper part of the seat. Bit of a cop out that Eduard only put the Mk 7 in the B boxing as most options offered in the box would probably have had the Mk 5, same goes in their F-4C rebox. That said, I have a pile of Eduards otherwise fine efforts! https://www.hypersonicmodels.co.uk/product/martin-baker-mk-h5-ejection-seats

Thanks for the info. I was under the impression they were used for target marking before bomb runs.
Breaker
Something worth noting now I've opened my box Dave to have a look, when you fit the front IP, use some plastic card or similar to pack the mounting points out. Need to add a bit of thickness to get it to line up correctly with the cowling.

DaveJL
Finally made a start on this today. Cockpit has been assembled, ready for paint: I decided against using all the etch as the plastic parts are very well detailed (plus I dislike working with etch ). Next, I assembled the wheel bays (which to be honest I found a bit fiddly) and built up the wings: Built up some of the pylons: And all the ordnance: Decided on 6x MK82 with fuse extenders, 6x MK82, 2x AIM-7, 4x MK77 Napalm canisters, 2x Zuni pods and 1x fuel tank. I went with Hasegawa MK82's as i found the Academy ones a bit soft in detail. Next up is to paint and finish the cockpit and get that fitted to the fuselage. More soon. DaveJL
More done today and she's starting to take shape. Cockpit was finished off: It was then installed into the fuselage and before i knew it, i had this: It went together very well, the fit is excellent. There are just a few small areas that need cleaned up around the intakes and nose cone. I also added the TERs and MERs to their respective pylons: And built up the exhausts. Unfortunately the one of the resin nozzles cracked as i was working with it. Luckily the plastic ones are well detailed so i'm not too bothered: Next up is to tidy up the nose cone and intakes, then add some more of the fuselage parts. More soon. DaveJL
More done today and I'm amazed at how quick this is going together! More cockpit details added along with the antennae and outer pylons with TERs: The minor filler around the nose has been cleaned up so it's just the small bits around the intakes that needs cleaned now. You can see how little filler the kit needs (mostly my fault as opposed to the kits at that). I'm very impressed with this kit! Next up is to clean the remaining filler, add the inner pylons and the last few bits and pieces then it's ready for paint. More soon. Breaker
Really good job Dave. I keep getting my two out the box and going 'nahhhh' for some reason!
DaveJL
Cheers mate. It's a great kit. A lot of plastic that isn't used which makes it look more daunting than it is! A full page of instructions is for the Brassin seats!
Breaker
Yeah, the weapons you get with both kits is impressive. The decalling guide for the stencils isn't so hot if I remember correctly though.
DaveJL
Plenty to choose from, though I preferred the Hasegawa MK82s to the kit ones. And yes, far too many stencils
Foghorn Leghorn
though I preferred the Hasegawa MK82s to the kit ones. Wise man, the kit 82s are strange. The Hasegawa 82s bodies have a gradual curve in outline (as I think they should be), the Academy 82s have a parallel outline at the centre of the bomb. It's a subtle shape but once you know it's there it can bug you. With all the (deserved) plaudits of the Academy F-4s, people never bothered to look at the 82s ... and that included me until recently. It's still a great kit but if anyone's got the kit (and you want to use 82s), it's worth using alternate 82s Or just build it, use the 82s and to hell with the rivet counters!
