Amt Klingon Bird of Prey

Recommended Posts

Hi all, just got my hands on AMT Klingon bird of prey model Generations release,

This question may have been asked already, did a search but could not find anything relevant.

So here Goes,

The Scale is stated as 1/650 on the box, yet subsequent releases of bird of preys state the scale as 1/350, the in flight version, the later round2 mod with landing gear.

Is this the same kit but with just a different scale plonked on it and updates, as digging the kit has the same overall dims as the supposed 1/350?

If any one can shed some light it would be most welcome as i want to build and display it with the right scale (ok near enough 1/537 etc) enterprise.

All the best Chris

Yes same kit. Only changed for the latest Round 2 release.

I would say it is nearer to 1/350 scale.

If you want one to go with your old 1/537, then you may have to resort to scratchbuilding. There was an old issue of Finescale Modeler which included plans in that scale, IIRC.

Andrew sorry to say regarding the kit your wrong, see link

If as you say the difference in quoted scales you get the following, memory alpha quotes the B'rel BoP @ 88m, at 1/650 this would come out 135mm long the kit is 251mm (10") the scale is wrong, yet at 1/350 251mm is bang on.

with regards to the K'vort class memory alpa quotes a length of 678m, at 1/350 this would come out 1937mm long yet the kit in its various reincarnations is as stated. even trying to justify 1/650 this still makes it a whopping 1043mm.

To make this work the scale would be 1/2700 which doesnt really fit in with any next gen models.

All the best Chris, ps

So in conclusion it would seem that AMT misquoted the scale to try to fit with their 1/537 scale enteprises, then corrected this on subsequent re-releases.

IIRC the confusion arose because the same studio model was used for the Kirk era B'rel and the Next Gen K'vort, the kit is a 1/350th B'rel and it was upgraded by Round 2 with landing gear and ramp for it's latest ST IV release.

Chris, I don't mean the kit. I meant the confusion over the scale of the BOP ;)

Thanks Carl, just picked up the amt star trek adversary set with a klingon Bop and ferengi marauder, supposedly listed as 1/537 but actually about 1/1400.

Be nice to see the resin one, why not post pics on ready for inspection?

All the best Chris

Here are some photos I took with my phone. I built it about 20 years ago and it was my first attempt at using a wash. As a result, it ended up quite a bit darker than I had expected.

One nice thing is the wings are positionable. They're tight but can still be adusted from cruising to attack mode.
