Spookytooth
Well folks, I had started this build two years ago, then she ended up on the shelf, and stayed there for 21 months. So , while waiting for the spare parts to arrive from Revell, and a bar on starting anything new, I picked this one up. The dive brake, all 56 holes drilled by hand. Some bits given a coat of Gloss Base Black prior to Alcad attack later. Now to turn a F 84 into a SR 71, well a Black bird of such. And here is the dive brake. Going to let these bits dry overnight before a light rub down of the plane and second coat. Aftermarket decals for this one, she is an Academy kit with naff decals. Will show the decals during the next posting. All comments welcome Simon.

Spookytooth
Well, I said that I would show the decals, and here they are. From the mighty "H" But, can you guess which one I am doing? Also today, gave the bird a second coat of black. Also the drop tanks and the rest were give a second coat. The tanks and mounts were given a coat of Alcad Airframe Aluminium. Again, I am leaving the job alone for the night, before spraying the plane itself. All comments welcome. Simon.
Gremlin56
Nice progress Simon, A metal coat and those decals will look really sharp. What size nozzle/needle did you use to spray the gloss black base coat? I couldn't get a neat coat on due to airbrush clogging but you seem to have this nailed

I am going to give her a final coat of black, before attacking with the Alcad Polished Aluminium. Thanks for the comment. Simon.

Spookytooth
Very nice NMF Simon, its always a great feeling to get one out from the "project department" Is this kit from Academy or Tamiya ? It`s the Academy version Bernd, the decals are crap so I got some A/M ones. I hope to get some more done over the next week or so, depending on the good lady Rose. BerndM
Thats live, Simon. Hope you have much modelling time at your bench. Academys decals look great on the paper, good idea to leave them there, i have the same kit, boxed from Italeri. decals look fine to me. Did the Tamiya F-84G in 1/48 some years ago, also a fine kit but the decals were crap too. Best wishes from my girl too, she has now a new modelling project, an egg plane. Could be interesting...
Spookytooth
Well , just into the new month and progress has been made. After a quick rub down with the old micro mesh, a third and final coat of black was added. Then left for the night to dry. Today, I managed to apply the polished aluminium. Also the doors and dive brake. I am going to leave this alone to dry overnight . Busy this weekend but I shall see what can be done. As usual, all comments welcome. BerndM
Great progress, Simon. The F-84G were great looking aircrafts, guess your one will be a fine rendition of it !
Gremlin56
It was a difficult aircraft to get airborne: Pilots nicknamed the Thunderjet "The Lead Sled".[2] It was also called "The Iron Crowbar", "a hole sucking air", "The Hog" ("The Groundhog"), and "The World's Fastest Tricycle", "Ground Loving Whore" as a testament to its long takeoff rolls.[2] F-84 lore stated that all aircraft were equipped with a "sniffer" device that, upon passing V2, would look for the dirt at the end of the runway. As soon as the device could smell the dirt, the controls would turn on and let the pilot fly off the ground. In the same vein, it was suggested a bag of dirt should be carried in the front landing gear well. Upon reaching V2, the pilot would dump the dirt under the wheels, fooling the sniffer device.[2] I remember years ago when I was "flight-sim" fanatic buying a sim called "Mig Alley". The F84 was modelled so well in that sim that it was very difficult to get the aircraft of the ground.
Spookytooth
Well, it has been nearly a month since I posted last. Not much has gone on. Touched up the paint work readying it for the decals. A coat of gloss varnish Vallejo . Then the decals. Fun, not. The kit ones were bad, heavy and plasticky, but the A/M set had no stencils so had to go with them. They all went down, after a fight with the decal fix stuff. Just the wingtip tanks and drop tanks and tail plane left to do then hopefully the final dash. All comments welcome. Simon.

Spookytooth
Looking very good Simon, you have won the battle with the decals. Which decal liquids do you use? Julian Cheers Gremlin. Most of the decals went down OK. I used Revell`s Decal Soft on them, but the Academy decals needed soaking in the stuff. Next time I get A/M decals, I will check to see if they provide the stencils. You could try the Mr. Mark soft and Mr. Mark set, they are a lot "hotter" than the Microsol/set and Revell Decal soft so need a little bit of getting used to but they work wonders. Only the Roden "armoured decals" defeated them on my workbench.

Spookytooth
Update. Not a lot really. Just more stencils, each time I think that I have finished I see another one to place. But saying that , she is nearly finished, with just a few bits left to fix on and varnish. Will post pics when she is readyish? Simon.
