Mclaren f1 longtail

Recommended Posts

I have made a start on this due to the weather not allowing any painting to be done at the moment

The box

20150820_142909_zpsv8l2jwk5.jpg

Hers a quick mock up of the major body parts

20150820_142900_zpsrshlr0ck.jpg

And here's my plan with it, this car will be made into the FIA GT car from 1997 but it won't be a box stock car, I have the Aoshima detail set to add a bit more realism but for me it's not enough so I have decided to cut the body up a touch and add some bits from under the skin (I will be using sascha müllers build as inspiration) honestly at this point in the build I haven't made me mind up how far I am going to go with it but for now here's where I'm at

Now you see it

20150820_143243_zpsp6rouht4.jpg

Now you don't

20150820_143253_zpsrthilf2a.jpg

I have made up a box section that fits into the gap which will hold a range of components

Also for those that don't know aoshima did an amazing job on this car with full engine detail unlike the fujimi version

Thanks for looking

Ooh, I'm looking forward to this! Thank you!

I have the orange Aoshima kit and have just bought the Fina decal set by Tabu.

Any idea if there's any difference between the two "pre-season" Aoshima kits?

Kev.

Kev I have the same decal set I think. The only difference I cam see between this version and the orange version is the opening at the very front of the car in the middle is smaller on the Orange version but other than that I can't see very many differences

Right so I am resurrecting this beauty.

Oh and key you asked about the differences I have found more, just ahead of the front wheels there is a box looking bit and some flick ups on the front corners but looking through the box this kit includes all the parts for these areas plus the bit to make the front opening smaller

I have one of these to do and have been there thinking of getting some aftermarket decals for her. I have the detail up set and have also found a couple more detail sets too. Good luck I will be watching closely. By the way there is a great book on the f1 called driving ambition which is worth getting hold of.

Thanks for the kind words

And John try 5 diamonds on ebay or hlj.com they both normally have a lot of different decal sets for this car.

Talking about decals it brings me swiftly on the this next installment

For those of you that saw my last finished build (the ferrari 248f1) will know how much I don't like carbon decals now due to the excess I went to on that build, so where is the logical place to start with the decal work on this? Yep you guessed it the bits that need carbon.

This is one of the engine bay bits that also holds the rear wing stays as well

20151206_230531_zpsixi7pdta.jpg

And some more carbon on the front splitter

20151206_221307_zpsi2ccckcp.jpg

Now for some non carbon related decals.

The offside door

20151206_230545_zpsoaovoglz.jpg

And a quick mock up of the engine covers and roof scoop on the body

20151206_221153_zpstaaqknoo.jpg

As you may have noticed there are no decals on the actual body, well that's because the blue area that goes under the fina decals for both sides need to be painted as the blue decal that was supplied didn't fit properly and left a lot of white areas. Not too happy about that given the decal set alone cost over £20 but I'm not the type of person to complain over something I can sort out quicker than it would take tabu to sort out so painting is the way forward I just hope tamiya french blue is close to decal colour otherwise it's going to look odd

Nice. Love the older ALMS/ELMS cars. Look forward to see this progress. I'm hoping to get my hands on a Matech FGT...got a friend checking into to it. I've also got a Porsche GT1 Evo (Revell/Monogram) kit to build at some point.

A little more on this now

The engine has been painted an alclad colour, I can't even remember which one

20151208_220833_zpsvz4ia5my.jpg

While the paint that I had to use for the blue on the car is drying I started to work on the engine bay so here's the surround with some of the carbon started

20151208_220823_zpspbkmkihg.jpg

And with the rear wing support bars on

20151207_222338_zpsrxvcbwcn.jpg

And last for now I have added this kevlar colour decal to the inner wheel wells, but not sure if when it's done if the wheels will be on or off yet

20151208_220812_zps0saowz7t.jpg

More bits later as I'm just about to start on the important bits (body decals) now

Thanks mickd

So more of the car

We'll start with the boring bits. Where I made a proper start to the engine bay I moved up to all the extra bits above that will connect to the body when done like this bit that houses the fuel filler bits and soon to be added wiring looms, I'm not looking forward to putting carbon over this bit with all those curves

20151209_180330_zpsmmwchjxm.jpg

Work on the floor is continuing with kevlar added to shore up the wheel Wells, more will be done with both paint and decal in this area before I'm happy with it

20151209_180400_zpsdd7oqwmt.jpg

This is the section that I am using to box in the side that I cut off when finished it will have electrical boxes and pumps and the floor jack in it, it's not a great angle of this with the picture as it has 2 layers whereas thud picture makes it look very flat

20151209_180449_zpsd90ixz9v.jpg

Right so now onto so more interesting bits of the car, body

The door with the aero profile with all decals on now

20151209_180600_zpsrkv7dkqs.jpg

Another quick one with the mirror

20151209_180521_zps6j5cgzml.jpg

And lastly the main body

20151209_180314_zpsfe6g1mww.jpg

And from the rear

20151209_180539_zpshv3kwyuu.jpg

More later

Thanks for the kind words guys.

Pedro I use a few methods for getting the shape of a part, sometimes I use tape and trim that around the part then peel off and put it on the decal sheet and cut around it, on this build I have mainly just used the part I wanted it for and drawn around it onto paper or onto the back of the carbon sheet and cute it out that way I can ensure I get a tight fit into the corners and joins.

So on with the build

More engine work has been done this us a bad picture of the top parts painted in black and a clear steel

20151214_145835_zpspgf6c849.jpg

Rear upper suspension arms painted gold like the real car, there is a lot more to do to this bit before I can put it on the engine/car

20151214_145745_zpsfajqqrqq.jpg

Like the rear the front upper suspension has been pained gold, I have found with taming paint pots the gold to be really thick and gloopy so I thinned it down with some ipa and now it paints a lot smoother just needs more coats for coverage

20151214_145752_zpsocrcltzu.jpg

I also repainted the engine alclad gold titanium I'm much happier with the look now

20151214_145821_zps6m4zv6vk.jpg

From the front

20151214_145814_zps0q8cywng.jpg

Oh and before I forget this is the better picture that shows the bit I'm using for boxing in the control boxes on the bit I cut off the body

20151214_145801_zps2hstrk1o.jpg

Kevlar added to the areas of the wheel Wells on the floor

20151213_154833_zpskp327uwc.jpg

And with the full wheel Wells

20151214_145725_zpsem7plzvm.jpg

Another part of the engine that needed some cf

20151214_145549_zpsnk2nhbds.jpg

Some carbon added to the diffuser and strakes

20151214_145609_zpswkul5zqc.jpg

And lastly I couldn't resist a mock up of the floor and body to see how it looked and it's when I look at this I think that wheels will be off

20151214_151819_zpsv7lnr4km.jpg

More soon

Thanks Simon

Not much been done recently due to the festive period and being dragged out to the shops at every opportunity but here's what's changed

The main body has finally been finished and is now ready for clear coating, given how mild it's been down south this will be the latest in the year I have ever tried to spray outside.

20151221_163314_zpsvbjgfav0.jpg

More carbon work has been done to the top of the engine bits

20151221_163332_zpsotathsix.jpg

More engine bits carbon, I have to be honest I don't know what this bit is called but it travels from the second engine cover through the gear box and out center of the rear bumper, given how well detailed the standard model is you can really get a feel for how complex this car was

20151221_163253_zpsv7p9ewve.jpg

Cam covers with carbon on

20151221_163222_zpsfywq608d.jpg

And finally I have attached most of the exhaust system (that will allow at this stage) after trying out a heat staining method I watched from you tube, looking at it now on the engine it does look to be a little over the top but most of the exhaust is hidden by how confined the engine bay is

20151220_152554_zps1gur3mj0.jpg

I have also made a start to the front uprights and found a set of electrical connectors in my spares box which are the right scale so they will be used

More soon
