1/32 Tamiya & HK Mosquito double build

Thanks gents. I actually finished the HK Mossie a while back but before I could take any decent pics, my 2 year old son decided to flight test it. The uh, landing sheared off the MLG and popped off an assortment of other parts. It's been sitting next to the Tamiya Mossie on my workbench looking quite sad. I was going to bin it but decided to give it a try at repairs.

Ill try to post the steps I missed before her maiden flight here to finish the WiP on her.

As for the Tamiya Mossie, I'm waiting on some correct 60lb rocket rails to come out. I believe MDC is supposed to have some soon.

OK, here's to catch up everything.

One of the issues with the HK kit is the singers are missing back plates. I used the extra set from the Tamiya kit along with the spinners themselves. To these I attached the HK props. The backplate needs a bit of work on the front and back (mostly grinding) and then it fits fine. The HK prop boss is a different diameter than the Tamiya one or I would have used the props as well.

Here's there backside after a coat of paint.

The front side with the tips masked off in preparation for painting them yellow.

Finally, here they are mounted to the aircraft.

For the markings, my preference is to use paint masks especially for things like the roundels. Maketar make a set of masks for the kit so that's what I've used.

Here's the upper wing one in place. I've left off the centre part as that will be there first colour sprayed. It's best to apply the mask with all its elements in one piece. This keeps everything aligned.

I then applied the masks for the finflash. I also apply additional tape around the masks to prevent overspray.

I sprayed a coat of white paint as a base for the red. As it later turned out, it wasn't necessary.

The next step is to apply the mask over the red and then remove the one for the blue.

Here's the finished results:

I then repeated this for the fuselage roundels and the red "no step" boxes over the rads.

As I was building Grim Reaper using the Eagle Editions decal sheet, I didn't have the fuselage codes available as paint masks. So those and the nose art are decals.

This was a near miss from our cat. Little did I know what would happen soon after.

These are a couple quick pics I took just before the crash.

They're certainly not the greatest and I was trying to find my camera when my son found it. Whenever he sees it next to my workbench, he and me if I'm going to fix it.

Hopefully I will.

The last bit of progress I made on the Tamiya Mossie was installing new rad screens made by RB Productions.

They also include replacement screens for the intakes. The ones in the Tamiya kit are clear plastic that you can see on the left of the above pic. So almost a must buy for the kit.

Here are the screens in place:

Lastly, the slipper tanks in the Tamiya kit are the smaller 50 gallon ones. The HK kit has 100 gallon tanks but they're not shaped correctly. Harold at AMS Resin has made correctly shaped 100 gallon tanks.

I've got a Battle of Britain Tamiya MK IX on my bench as well as a pair of Lotus Esprits but once those are done, I think I'll come back to both these builds. Thanks for expressing your interest in them.

Any update ? I would love to see the finished products

Sadly I never fixed the B.IV kit.  It ended up getting binned during a bench clean up.

I finally got around to finishing the Tamiya one though. One of the things that I wasn't happy with was the kit PE seat belts. I really hated the way they turned out.

Between that and the crash of the HK kit, I didn't have much enthusiasm for getting back to finishing it. A friend finally convinced me to get back to it so i started by ripping out the belts and replacing them with some from HGW. Thankfully with the large canopy opening, it wasn't too hard to do.

I then started on the camo scheme which was going to be the main focus of this build. I started by closing up the cowls and masking off the canopy.

Then I sprayed the standard grey and green camo pattern over the upper surface.
