fingers
Great work so far. Is it just me but when it comes to the instrument panel does the Tamiya one with the more subdued finish look more realistic than the HK/Eduard one? Although I'm sure the Eduard set is more detailed etc.
The Crusty one
I'm watching with great interest mate...as I will more than likely never be able to afford either one of these kits!😩 great work so far😊
Flankerman
Great progress and comparison between the two kits. The photo of the two nacelles inverted, side-by-side shows a subtle, but distinct, difference in shape at the trailing edge of the nacelles - the curves are definitely different. Is that down to different versions of the Merlin/nacelle - or to differences in research ?? Carry on with the fascinating work... Ken
FG2Si
Thanks everyone! Great progress and comparison between the two kits. Is that down to different versions of the Merlin/nacelle - or to differences in research ?? Carry on with the fascinating work... Ken There is a definite difference in the shape of the nacelles. Someone else pointed out that it may be due to one kit being based off a Canadian built aircraft while the other used a British one as reference. The biggest difference between the kids is the profile of the wing leading edge. The HK kit is more blunt and not as rounded on top which you can see in this pic: Otherwise they match up very well dimensionally. FG2Si
Back to the cockpit, I painted the interior green and turn started on the details. I prefer to mask then off and airbrush these as my brush work isn't the greatest. The pilot's seat from the Tamiya kit: A bunch of cockpit parts: Front bulkhead and copilot's backrest: Driftsight and floor assembly underway: Assembled with kit PE belts in place:
FG2Si
Then repeat with the HK kit: These are the HGW fabric belts. In hindsight, I should have used a set on the Tamiya kit as well. Since the HK fuselage is a single piece, the cockpit is slid in from the middle as a single unit. Here are the sidewalls painted and detailed: Ready for installation:

rob85
To be honest your work is flawless.... But I think your mental doing them both together.... But you are doing a very good job, so maybe only madness to me are the scale and detail scares me senseless... Rob
Lionfish
Really excellent work and interesting to see both mosses side by side like this. I am impressed that you manage to keep both of them on the go and not lose focus!
TGA
It's funny, a mix of these models would be the perfect model by the look of things. I prefer the HK cockpit by a country mile but I prefer the Tamiya engine nacelles.... Great work, I really enjoy reading this topic!
tonyot
This is coming on really well,......you certainly know your stuff too! Have you decided upon colour schemes for the pair yet? I`d love to build the HK kit as a Canadian manufactured B.25 flown by the Fleet Air Arm from Malta during the late 1940`s in an overall silver scheme, but that is just my personal choice! Good luck and keep up the great work, Tony

FG2Si
Thanks everyone! I didn't get much time to work on anything this weekend which should make catching the thread a bit easier. I joined the front and rear halves of the Tamiya kit together. They're a nice fit with no gaps or tweaking needed. The clamps were to ensure a tight fit. While that was setting up, I started work on the wing. The Tamiya one has a central spar which has the roof of the bomb bay and gear bays on it. I painted the rad recesses on the lower wing in Sky prior to installing the rad screens. This was based on standard colours for a Coastal Command Mossie. Unfortunately, I was a bit off once I received the decal instructions so it didn't save me any work. With the lower wing panels attached: Edited August 24, 2015 by FG2Si
FG2Si
Here are the rads in place. If I were to build another, I would leave them off until after the wing was installed as I kept knocking them off or bending them. The roof of the gear bay painted: There are a pair of fuel tanks that go in the rear half of the bomb bay. I painted these using the colour mix in the instructions and once dry, I masked them off to paint the straps interior green. Installed in the bomb bay:

Gimme Shelter
Amazing work - I am really pleased to see a comparative build between these 2 new kits as I was contemplating having a go at one in the future. I am normally more easily drawn to a Tamiya kit if 2 options of manufacturer are available but I must say that the HK alternative here certainly looks very enticing. Keep Calm and Mossie On
FG2Si
Thanks folks, Turning my attention to the HK wing, I installed the trailing edge inserts. These existing the wing to the right thickness and stiffen it up as well. Back to the Tamiya kit, I installed the completed cockpit into the right half. Again, the clamp was to ensure a tight fit. Then I joined the left side. There were a couple small places that needed a spot of Mr Surfacer500 but otherwise, they fit together well. At least I didn't have to worry about re-scribing panel lines I don't have the biggest workbench so it was filling up with Mossie subassemblies quickly.
FG2Si
Time for the HK kit to get its cockpit installed. First, I added a couple bits inside the nose area. Having done a couple of dry runs, I knew the cockpit module would fit tightly, but without any issues. You do need to be careful so as not to knock off the pilot's seat and copilot's bulkhead but that's about it. Side by side, as they might have appeared on the factory floor:
FG2Si
Prior to the main wing being installed, both kits require the assembly of the radio shelf (for want of a better term) before the wing can go in. This it because the radio gets sits on top of the wing. The HK kit isn't as detailed here but the Tamiya kit has an optional radio which I'll use instead. There was a slight gap between the radio shelf and the cockpit bulkhead so I surrender it with strip styrene.

VonkeyVong
Great work and you are braver than me to be tackling both these kits at the same time. I have both kits so it is great to see a side by side comparison. For me the Tamiya kit beats the HK kit hands down. That isn't knocking the HK kit its just Tamiya are so damn good. Anyway, I am following with great interest. Matt.
