Flyhawk HMS Naiad

Recommended Posts

I got mine from a Chinese seller on Ebay as I couldn't find it in the UK when it came out. It looks like Dorking Models might be stocking them now.

They are also the UK Stockist for HP Model, it's where I got my 1/700 HMS Delhi from.

thanks

Mike

PS ignore the kit instructions for the colours as they are very wrong.

Hi Mike,

Thanks, I'll check their website. I've seen the Chinese website, but I want to give a UK vendor a chance before I buy it abroad.

Bet Wishes,

Will.

I got a bit excited and ordered it as soon as it was offered for sale! As WEM had already closed I didn't think anyone in the UK stocked them! Dorking models are good, I've had no bother getting HP Models stuff off them. It's best to ring them first and check they are in stock before ordering.

What is the correct colour scheme for this vessel ?

I can't remember off the top of my head, it's in one of Alan Raven's RN Camouflage books, which I've not got to hand right now. I'm sure I posted the info in a different thread about this kit. It's definitely not Green/Brown. It uses official Admiralty colours, like Greys, Blues and possibly even Black.

thanks

Mike

Yes I posted the info in the new releases bit of this forum a few months ago when it arrived. It was painted in Black, APC507B and APC507C, I would assume the metal decks were in APC507A, unless there was evidence to contradict that and that the wooden decks be left in there natural wood colour.

thanks

Mike

The green and brown scheme is probably from the centre pages of Ensign 2 "Dido class cruisers" which dates from 1973. By Raven and lenton

Page 46 of Warship Perspectives Camouflage Vol 1 - RN 1939-1941 (printed 2000) also by Alan Raven gives a very similar scheme in terms of pattern but states that the colours are black, 507B and 507C and that this was worn from completion until around September 1941 when she changes to dark grey hull and light grey upperworks.

I have never seen anything from Alan Raven to explain why he changed his mind but perhaps someone else has.

Hi, I took the hint Mikemx, and ordered the HMS Naiad from Dorking models yesterday at 4.30 pm - it arrived today at 9.15am! What brilliant service from them! Absolutely first rate.

I have to say I am stunned at the quality of the kit too, but now need to find out the correct colour scheme...

Thanks immensely for the info that we can get this from the UK, rather than China now.

All the best, Ray

No worries, now we know where to get the forthcoming Flyhawk 1/700 HMS Penelope and HMS Campbeltown when they turn up!

Ultimately you can paint however you want but I would go with Black, APC507B and APC507C on the vertical surfaces, APC507A on the steel decks and the wooden decks painted in your preferred colour for natural wood decks. That's Raven's latest published info on HMS Naiad's colours, so like I said earlier, I think perhaps he came across info suggesting that after the Green/Brown idea.

thanks

Mike

There is a more detailed discussion on this at http://www.shipmodels.info/mws_forum/viewtopic.php?f=48&t=9774&start=60 including Alan Raven's explanation why he changed things.

Profile Morskie produced an edition on HMS Naiad. It had plans and details for this ship. I don't know how long ago it was published but I'm sure it could be found on-line or at a model show.
