Messerschmitt Bf109E-1 1/72

Recommended Posts

Having built a few of the (newish) 1/72 Airfix 109E-4/7 kits I wanted to do an E-1.

Rather than try and find a E-1 kit, or use an E-3, I decided I would have a go at modifying an Airfix E-4.

This required a change of canopy to the earlier style, and removal of the 20mm cannon, as the E-1 had 7.92mm MG 17's in the wings.

I had in my stash a couple of E-1 style vac canopies to suit Heller, Matchbox and Airfix 109, but I believe that this must be for the older tool kit, as the vac canopy was a bit narrow.

I have an Avis 109D kit in the stash and it has 2 canopies in it (not sure why).

So I used one of these as it fit okay and while not great, it was acceptable by my standards.

I did a work in progress, but can't figure out how to link here.

It was an enjoyable build, however next time I think I will use a Tamiya E-3.

Built as Yellow 14 of 6 (J) TrGr 186 1939-40 using Print Scale decals.

Painted with GUNZE aqueous RLM 70/71/65.

This is the first time I have used these paints on the exterior of a model, and they spray beautifully.

That's a really neat and spotless machine, as beoves an early Emil from the prewar/early war era.

The fact that the ailerons are subtly deflected down because of the fully deployed flaps is duly noted. Bravo!

Kind regards,

Joachim

Thanks for the kind words everyone.

I put a bit effort into making holes where I thought they would enhance the build (including the tail wheel frame).

Some were worth the exercise, and some maybe not so much.

All good experience, that hopefully improves my builds.

Pics aren't that good.

If a bright sunny day becomes available soon, I may see if i can get a better photo.

Looking forward to trying some other brands of 109, amongst the ever growing cue of other aircraft types.

This is a very clean build, beautifully painted.

I have kept an E-4 kit to do an E-1, like you have. Just do not have a canopy yet...

How did the decals behave as I have the same decal sheet to use.

Great show

Nice job on that Wayne, the 70/71 uppers really do give the Emil an unusual look. How did the Printscale decals perform, they look good on the finished item & seem to have good colour opacity?

Steve.

Thanks.

Though far from a decal expert, here is my take.

The print scale decals have a thin carrier film (if not a little on the big side around the 14).

This resulted in me botching the second wing walk marking, so I replaced them both with the Airfix items.

The colours are opaque enough, though some very slightly out of register on the port witch's hair.

I was mostly pleased with them, will use more from the "Emil" sheet and others that I have, and would buy others as they seemed to me to be reasonable value.
