Exhaust springs made from thin single core wire from what looks like computer ribbon [who knows where I got that from!?], wrapped around a 0.35mm dia twist drill. I fed a strand down the spring core and bent it to form the hook. Under the naked eye these all looked a bit more tightly coiled, looks like the smaller ones need redoing. This is the beginnings of the Zard underseat exhaust. The kit sub-assemblies are taped together to gauge the pipe run, I was hoping to reuse the loop from the kit but I think it may be too open. The angled sections will need some more bending and I need to make a couple of extra sections to go into the end cans etc., etc., - all from a No.8 plastic knitting needle formed over a candle during this morning's confessional . The square of plasticard has 3 lengths of plastic tube glued together, the edges then have to be bent over the centre tube, glued, left to dry then cut along the centreline forming the triangular shape, thus forming the end cans. I have most of the sections cut and formed to size, what's left is the link pipe from the Y to the loop and trimming the pipe from the front cylinder where it butts to the loop. The openings in the end cans need fettling and the outlet pipes adding. Some brackets for the joint springs and a 'Lambada' sensor, well it's an all singing and dancing system! mbdesignart Posted August 31, 2015 Author Share Posted August 31, 2015 Been reworking the exhaust pipes from plastruct tube as I was far from happy with the Y piece, which now resides in the bin of inadequacy. Much cutting and shutting of new sections to do. Also looking at something special with the wheels which has sidetracked my attention - but that's Top Secret for now . mbdesignart Posted September 19, 2015 Author Share Posted September 19, 2015 (edited) The Zard system is now in the spares box due to not being able to achieve satisfactory pipe bends. A search for alternatives resulted in this which is a simple 'slip-on' system. This will be much closer to the look of Paul Smart bike and free up the undertail section. Made from bits of Plastuct, 4mm dia rod and other bits. Due to the kit mounting location points for the hanging brackets not being quite as the real thing I cut off the front one and replaced it with tube to capture the small screw and extended the front U section. Whilst busy priming my Heller H Van [build post in WIP] I thought I'd may as well as add this to the pile of bits to spray. However, looking at the Paul Smart bike I decided to take a brave pill and attack the fairing. You can see where I have made the cut and this will expose quite a bit of the engine and hopefully reflect my take on the PS bike. The rear corner of the upper section has been rounded off to reflect the stock section above, now for the other side. I'm still also pondering on a trellis frame rear swing arm!! ! This still needs a lot of work filling, filing and fettling which should keep me quiet. I've done a bit more filling and sanding and have decided, before going too much further I need to add a couple of pinch bolts to the back of the hub and whilst I'm at it some cable runs for the rear brake. This may take a while to get around to as I'm busy with last minute jobs for SMW. injidup, I have been eyeing up a Hyperstrada as I have fond memories of a Multistrada I had a while back. Very nice but far too much bike for me, but the Hyper models suit me much better. I'm finding the Scrambler a bit small, keep scraping my toes! Not much difference between the Hypermotard and Hyperstrada but I don't need the touring bits yet. What finish are you putting on the discs?? Satin or matt?! Also on the front mud guard are you using carbon fibre look? Glad they didn't have a Paul Smart at the dealers, that would have been very hard to resist! And probably waaaay out of my price range. If so how are you gonna achieve that look Re the discs it will either be AlClad or, if it's still ok in the tin, some Humbrol Polished Aluminium. It won't be matt, if you look at your bike's brake discs from a distance to match the 1/12 ones that should give you a fair indication of the finish. As for the front mudguard most likely silver as per the PSM bike. I can't see a need for Carbon Fibre on my version of this bike. Build update - pinch bolts and brake cable runs have been added to the trellis swing arm along with more filler and sanding but I'm still not happy with the finish. I'm going to try some Albion Alloys needle files to get into the joints. But I have to leave this, again, for my Citroen H Van build. A case of too many pies, not enough fingers...
