1:48 B17G 'Sally B' tribute

Recommended Posts

This was a huge build that has taken me 18 months. I have posted a WIP thread on Britmodeller which gives you the full details. In short this is a tribute to the final flying B17G in Europe: Sally B. Using the Revell B17 F as the main model and taking relevant parts from the Monogram G I scratch built much of the interior in conjunction with resin and Eduard PE upgrade sets.

I wanted to depict her in a scheme which represented the main schemes she has worn over the years. The most famous being one of the stars of the Memphis Belle film.

Taken from the Sally B supporters page:-

'Businessman and pilot, Ted White brought F-BGSR to Britain via Biggin Hill to the Imperial War Museum Duxford, as N17TE, in March 1975, to begin a new life as Sally B, named after Ted’s long-time companion Elly Sallingboe. Sally B made her debut at the 1975 Biggin Hill Air Fair, flying as the USAAF World War Two Memorial Flight. The struggle to operate Sally B successfully in this important role had begun.

Ted was killed when his T-6 Harvard, G-ELLY, crashed during an air rally in Malta. Devastated by the disaster, Elly and the team pulled themselves together to hold the air display, and to continue flying Sally B as Ted would have wished. In his memory, Sally B’s starboard inner engine cowling will always carry the same black and yellow chequered markings as his Harvard.

Elly recalls, “Ted’s main aim in life was to keep Sally B flying as a memorial to the US airmen who died during the Second World War, and he had the utmost respect for all the members and supporters who contributed to the cause. All the crew and the team at B-17 Preservation were determined to carry on in his memory.”

I wanted to set her in a typical wartime setting, after some considerable research I decided to put her in a diorama using Tamiya vehicles appropriate for the time along with air and ground crew. It was my 1st attempt at a diorama and found it difficult to replicate the hard standing. I am happy with the overall result and learnt a lot!

I realize the whole thing isnt perfect but it gives an overall impression of what it would have been like before a mission. I hope you understand where I am coming from this build.

Superb, everything about this dio is class. May I ask, did you paint the red checkers on the jeep, or are they decals?

WOW !! I am really impressed with the amount of work involved. The warbird looks great and I know that each individual diorama piece took a lot of time and patience as well. Thanks for sharing it with us. Bob H.
