1/8 D Type Jaguar - update

Recommended Posts

A few kind souls have been commenting on how I always get it right, and my models come out like a factory production line...

Well, here's where my scratch built D Type Jaguar is at present.

I completed the build a good few months ago and the car rests nicely inside a display case to keep the dust bug at bay.

However, over the past 6-8 weeks I noticed that the decals on the bonnet (hood) were 'orange peeling' somewhat.

Closer inspection revealed that somehow it was the lacquer underneath that was crinkling, but ONLY where the decals were.

I duly peeled the decals away - they came off FAR too easily, so I knew something was adrift - and I was horrified by the paint underneath.

The entire decal pattern seemed to have eaten into the paint by a considerable amount.

The fittings were all removed and the offending areas rubbed back although even 160 grit wouldn't remove the marks!

White filler - the patterns had eaten right into the panel - and a lot of rubbing down.

Here the beastie is at present...

(Who says my things don't ever go wrong???)

Roy.

Roy, I forgot to mention; there is a way to prevent that which works well for me.

I apply an airbrushed coat (actually 2 mist coats) of Future Acrylic (it may be called Johnson's Pledge or similar name in the UK) under the primer on finished body work. Then prime and another coat under the finish color. It is an excellent barrier to prevent ghosting and bleed through. It self-levels beautifully.

You can carefully brush it on the spot(s) prior to decal application. Just let it dry thoroughly for an hour or so before wetting the surface. Aircraft modelers frequent coat the painted airframe in Future, apply decals and then shoot their flattening top coats on.

A question if I may. What product is that metallic blue and what type of clearcoat did you use?
