Tonka GR1A to GR1B conversion - what's needed?

Hi folks

Thinking of doing my Revell 72nd scale GR.1 as a GR.1B (Lossiemouth based) to display alongside my Nimrod (Kinloss based). Any of you know what's required (regarding addition of the Sea Eagles), and what's available in the way of weapons, pylons and decals? Doubt I'd change the cockpit, just do the externals.

Any help/advice would be gratefully received.

I have just finished a Revell 1/72 Tornado GR1 as a B and all I did was apply decals for the Sqn and the aircraft required. Only 12 and 617 Sqns flew this type of Tornado and only 25 were converted. I did not use Sea Eagle missiles as the aircraft that I was portraying was using LGBs in the Gulf.

Jabba - that's a way round it, alright. I just want something Lossie based to compliment my Grimblenod, so I suppose I could get away with leaving the Sea Eagles off and just change the 'stickers' on the sides :winkgrin: - or I could go and get the rather nice Hasegawa K28 kit (which I believe has what I need).

Did GR1B's ever deploy to the Gulf area, can't remember them doing so?

The GR1B wasn't introduced until 1994 and had been superseded by the Gr4 by the time of Op Telic. However, 12 and 617 Sqn (the only Gr1B squadrons) deployed aircraft for Op Jural/Bolton which was a deployment to Kuwait as part of Southern Watch, the aircraft wore the standard camo of the time but had a white recognition chevron on the fin during Desert Fox in 1998.

Also some were in the newer of that time grey scheme. The white chevron also had a Union Jack applied for the Desert Fox Op.

You will need a pair of launchers off the Buccaneer S2 has the Sea Eagles where "nose down" on the GR1B's

Thanks for that advice, HP. I figured I'd have to scratch something for the Tonka as the Harrier mounts would 'most likely' not be right. Not so familiar with the Bucc and hadn't thought of that as a donor. I guess a patient request to the kindly folks here is the next step :whistle::)

My latest Airfix Buccs come with a plethora of pylons - I'll chuck in a pair of the Sea Eagles-appropiate ones with the missiles, alright?

The grey GR.1Bs were overall dark sea grey as opposed to the later two-tone scheme worn by GR.4s. I remember one of the RAF Yearbooks with typical Wilf Hardy cover artwork showing a grey GR.1B launching a Sea Eagle in typical North Atlantic weather. Airfix reissued their 1/48 Tornado as a GR.1B with a grey Shiney Twelve jet which I enthusiastically purchased. Never did get round to it and it was sold on many moons ago. Hey-ho.

I don't think that's quite correct, the GR1B's certainly wore the standard dark sea grey/dark camo grey along with the rest of the fleet. Perhaps a trial overall dark sea grey paint job?

I was planning to modify a couple of the ALARM launch rails to use as Sea Eagle rails for my GR .1B.....and these are in the GR.1 kit.

The GR.1B was the first variant to go grey, and certainly the first ones to be repainted were overall dark sea grey. How many or which ones I don't know, but the aircraft on display at Duxford is in those colours. Quite why they changed to the two-tone grey I don't know, but even before the GR.4 conversion line was under way GR.1s were being painted in the two-tone scheme.

The only thing I can think of at the moment is an example of the 12 Squadron markings on the sheet of Airfix's previous release of the Buccanneer that aren't so wildly out of register as to be unusable, but fat chance of that.

Never say Never T7, but I very much doubt that any Tornado's were painted in an overall Dark Sea Grey. Certainly the GR1 at Duxford is clearly in two-tone grey, (well actually a few more as the canopy is in MSG!! The leading edge slats also have a couple of what looks like Dark Green panels as well!) But if you look at photo's of the airbrake area, windscreen and upper spine you can see the darker shade and demarkation line.

The two-tone grey scheme(s) introduced on the Jaguar, Harrier and Tornado fleets were meant to deceive the eye. The upper Dark Sea Grey with more light from above, supposedly(!) should and would blend in with the Dark Camo Grey on the sides and below to give an overall uniform dark grey effect, but there is a noticeable demarkation line on all of these aircraft.

Note the darker grey panel line running aft of the airbrake up to the reverse thruster buckets. Fin leading edge, spine aft of canopy and below pen nib fairing and heat exchanger, the Dark Green/Dark Sea Grey colours of the Harrier GR3 coming into land (!) and the Bucc behind.

The first all-grey Tornado was FQ of 12 Squadron, and it was over-all Grey (I beleive Dark camouflage Grey). This was subject to a widely published air to air photoshoot to show off 12 Squadron's new GR1B

There are various stories about why it was a single colour - one is that the overall DCG was found to be too light when viewed from above over the sea, so the DSG topside was added to tone it down a bit. Another was that it was the first repainted, and the 'boss' wanted the smart new scheme for the scheduled air-to-air, so it was delivered part-finished for the shoot.

I'll see if I can dig out the pics - IIRC it was in WAPJ
