Project #2: Airfix Do17Z 1/KG76 and 504 sqn Hurricane of Sgt Holmes: Head-on over London! Dornier done!

Recommended Posts

Am looking forward to this - am planning to use the Xtradecal marks from the 70th anniversary sheet with the Devil nose art and pink bars. This should go nicely with the Italeri HE111 using decals from the same sheet.

Hi all, am about to post initial pics of this project, but have just twigged that this is the machine that went down into Victoria station after being rammed by the hurricane of Sgt Holmes of 504 sqn - and the codes and serial number for his machine are known! So, this thread is going to become a. 'dogfight double' project as allowed in the rules, i.e. two specific machines that are known to have fought each other at a specific point in time. V. pleased - wanted to do this but couldn't find an example that wasn't already being done, or for which references for markings are known. Will use a Hasegawa 1/72 kit for this, and plan to have both ready for the 15th - BoB day and the day this encounter happened. Pics to follow.

Right, update pics plus some links to the history of the actual combat. This is a link to details about Sgt Holmes and the action concerned, and here is a pic of the man himself. The combat itself has also been immortalised in art, via a picture by the artist Geoff Nutkins. Here is a profile by Aviation Art of Holme's Hurricane which I will use to guide my model (I can't find any pics of his machine), and finally a shot of the remains of the DO17's tail section on a London roof.

Here's where I am with the Dornier. It is crammed with detail; hearing of very tight tolerances I elected to build the whole thing as you would when you were seven (i.e. no paint!) and get it all together. I primed afterwards, and then gave the cockpit an airbrushed shot of Tamiya 'RLM Grey' which is their equivalent to RLM02. Prefer it to the Xtracrylix version - slightly lighter, and dries to a lovely hard wearing matt finish. It looks darker in the photo than it does in reality. I'll pick out details later with a fine brush, and give it a light oil wash. I wil also add Tamiya tape belts for the seats. You will note I haven't bothered with the bomb bay particularly - this will be closed up for my model.

Here's the hurricane. Not built a Hasegawa Hurricane before, but Mk1 Hurricanes (metal winged anyway) are not exactly common. Can't help but think Airfix would have done well to release a metal winged version of their fabric winged kit, but there it is. Codes and roundels etc will be courtesy of Xtradecal and the spares box. The fabric effect on the fuselage is rather overdone, so have just spent five minutes knocking it back a bit with sandpaper. Looks much better now. More later!

Nice progress Paul, it's looking good so far can't wait for the next instalment. That hurricane looks a nice kit.

Nice work on the 17. Very cool project, interested to see what you do with it! It has always been aware and loved this moment, really captures the feeling of the battle IMHO. Stopping the enemy by what ever means possible.

Right, back from hols and it's time to crack on, appropriately on the 'Hardest Day'. I've been adding details to the Dornier cockpit by way of detail painting, a light oil wash and Tamiya tape belts. Am pretty pleased with it; it'll look the part under all that glazing in any case. I have also started to work on the props and engines, but more pics of them tonight.

Meanwhile, the Hurricane is taking shape. Cockpit done. Simple (especially when compared to the Airfix kit) but effective, and I doubt that much will be seen when the canopy is added. I've added a triangle of plasticard to the bulkhead behind the seat to cover the joint line, and added Tamiya tape seatbelts too dress it up a bit. I'll get the wings and fuselage joined up tonight, and mask the canopy - that'll be fun in the absence of an Eduard set for the hasegawa kit!

Well, with my JG3 Me 109 done and 603 sqn Spitfire just about there, thought it best to get cracking with my dogfight double. With a decent night's sleep a thing of the past with my current job, I have just spent a pleasant couple of hours getting the hurricane and dornier fuselage and wings together. The Dornier is a particularly enjoyable kit, and I think I will have to build a Kenley raider for my annual BoB project next summer - along with Airfix's new Stuka that should be out by then. Now I just need a Ju88A1 to be released and I'll have the set! Pics in the meantime...

I doubt there are any pics of P2725, well of the sort we would like!

The profile, well, I'd not trust a profile without a photo..... less facetiously, there are pics of 504 Sq planes from the era.

The codes read B-TM on port, and TM-B on starboard (this varies between squadrons) and by 15th September there should be underwing roundels.

I assume the artist used this photo as a reference, or the other one I mention.

note serial over code letters. No underwing roundels visible, but wing is in shadow.

this is in France, but shows the other side

There is another 504 Sq Hurricane, but in which book I can't remember, and they are not too hand to recheck. but it's a starboard shot.

The codes are also unusual in they are smaller than most Hurricane codes of the era.

The sanded fuselage is looking pretty good. I think I'm going to have to break out the sandpaper for my build.

Quick update, on the hurricane specifically. I've painted the cutout under the rear of the canopy dark green to match the camo pattern (in reality that cutout doesn't exist but is there on the kit to allow the canopy to fit) and then PVAed the canopy on. I've also hand cut masks from Tamiya tape, as Eduard strangely don't appear to do a mask set for the Hasegawa hurricane. Hurricane canopies appear to challenge kit makers, and it's not really possible to use a mask set for another manufacturer's hurricane as the canopies are so different from kit to kit. Oh well - pretty pleased with the result. That tiny chunk of white plasticard on the canopy is a representation of the streamlined mirror that many Hurricanes seemed to use during the Battle. Once again, pleased with the result. I'm going to prime it before getting the camo on.

Right, don't think I'm going to make the 15th deadline for the 70th anniversary of the combat between these two planes, but the hurricane is making good progress. Paints all on; tamiya sky, green and humbrol brown. I've also masked and sprayed up the red gun patches. I've given it a shot of kleer, and hopefully get on with decals tonight.

Evening all,

Have been off my GB projects due to work bloody work. Might be just hitting middle forties, but am seriously beginning to resent it after 30 years of continuous study/work/study/work. Beginning to recognise an incipient midlife crisis! Oh well, at least there's plastic models. I've finished the hurricane, and am reasonably pleased with this. Still think there's room for the definitive Mk1 Hurricane in 1/72, but this hasegawa effort has been good fun. Decals were cobbled together from various xtradecal sheets, and the model is placed on the Amera BoB blastpen that I've just finished.

DSCN2544.jpgDSCN2545.jpg

Meanwhile, the Dornier is making decent progress. I've finished the undercarriage (on which the model is currently propped) and got all the guns and glazing on. I am letting this dry thoroughly before adding the masks. I need to get a move on to finish this so I have a good month to finish my Eduard 110.

Well, the deadline for this GB is almost up! Work has completely dominated the last few weeks, but have pulled out respective digits and finished the painting and decalling of my Dornier. Am feeling jolly pleased with it. Here it is all done aside from the removal of the masks. Those white rectangles on the fuselage is the PVA glue I have used to glaze the windows yet to to dry. Plan is to let this sit today to let everything finish drying, then to pour a glass of something strong while those masks come off - always a tense moment! I'll then post pics of this and the hurricane together for the gallery. Unfortunately, my 1/48 Me110 is going to miss the deadline, but I don't think four models (1/7s Spitfire, Me109, Do17 and Hurricane, plus my blastpen model) is too bad! Thanks for the enthusiasts who have made this GB one of the most successful yet, judging by the number of gallery entries!

Looking good Paul, smart move with the bomb-bay 'skylights', the kit clear parts were a pain to fit at the end.

Looking forward to the gallery pics and congratulations on your four completions - sterling effort, chap B)

Cheers,

Stew
