Tamiya 1/35 Sd.Kfz. 222 Leichter Panzerspähwagen

Recommended Posts

It might seem a bit premature starting this thread already as I don't intend making a start on this until I'm back at work at sea towards the end of next week, 18th June-ish but I want to make sure I have everything I need.

So this is the kit.

128398-10911_zpsxgttkabk.jpg

I intend building and painting the panzer grey version of 1st company, 4th Kradschutzen battalion, 24th Panzer Div. South Russia August 1942.

I'd appreciate if some helpful soul could have a look at my list of stuff required for the build and tell me if I've forgotten anything, there's still room in the cardboard box I'm packing but it'll be difficult to get anything I've forgotten once on location between the Shetlands and Norway. :)

Palette

Primer

Files

Modelling knives

brushes

Side cutters

Pin vice and drill bits.

Pastels.

Glue

Model filler

Gloss varnish

Matt varnish.

Sanding sticks

Tweezers

Paints I've got covered.... hopefully.

Roger.

Oh, I've just finsihed this model. It was a lot of fun. The list looks good. Seems like you have everything you need. I am following this with interest. A piece of advice: you may wanna recreate the side panels inside, jus under the little turret. They will be visible - something to think about.

Thanks for the reply Dawid. When you say recreate the inside side panels do you mean the paint scheme or the addition of equipment?

I've got to admit it's taking a hell of a lot of willpower not to make a start on it. This must be the first time I've had any enthusiasm for going back to sea. Lol.

I couldn't help myself but only the figure for the time being :). I wasn't sure whether to post this here or in the figures section but as it's an intergral part of the kit it seemed logical to post here.

The face still needs some work and is shiny from the paint not being dry yet. Following some research and some assistance I painted green waffenfarbe for 4th Kradschutzen battalion, 24th Panzer Div.

  • 2 weeks later...

I'm back at work and up and running with this little project. After all the planning when I was on leave I still managed to forget my can of grey spray primer so a bit of improvisation will be needed.

My other problem is Photobucket is blocked so I'm hoping this will work using Google photo's. Please let me know if you can see the pics because if not I'll have to try a different approach.

My modelling area for the next four weeks.

Hi Roger. Yep can see the photos after following the links. Set up looks good as does your progress. I don't use primer on my models and I don't think it causes any problems. I suppose it may if the kit gets roughly handled but once the spraycan matt varnish is on it's all pretty well sealed.

Kind regards,

Stix

Hi Stix, thanks very much for the reply, it's a new wifi set up on the ship so we're just finding our way with it. Photobucket is banned because of, I quote, "Adult/Sex", all I want to do is post pics of a plastic armoured car Lol.

You're probably right about not requiring primer, it's a habit I've got from painting whitemetal figures. My only concern is the aluminium gun barrel.

Roger.

Update time, things are proving a little difficult as regards posting here on the forum, I have no access to photobucket and I don't have a posting tool bar. It worked fine at home so I imagine it's being blocked by our company's over zealous internet software.

I'll persevere anyway. Although I left the can of grey Halfords primer at home I did bring a can of Humbrol matt black primer. I'm not sure how this plan will work out but I have primed the lower half of the vehicle with the matt black and then I'm going to lightly spray it with TS-4 German Grey also from a rattle can slowly building up the coats until I'm happy with the finish.

We'll see how well it works, this is where I could do with the smillies. (:

Cheers Stix, the weather isn`t too great which makes things a bit difficult but it's getting there.

I would imagine it does make it a bit awkward!

Nice progress, I will follow your work...I built this one when it was a "new release" ;-) I remember it as a nice kit.

Thank you Roberto, I am enjoying it. In hindsight I should have left the wheels off for now but I'm sure I can work around that.

A bit of making use of what was at hand for masking before a coat of TS-4.

Just a few pieces to add before shading, highlighting and weathering. I've decided to leave the anti-grenade mesh off the turret until I get home to prevent it from being damaged.

Hi Roger. I hadn't seen these when I posted my stuff this morning. Your progress looks great. I'm very impressed with what your able to achieve with limited equipment. Your paint finish is superb! I think it's a good idea not fitting the mesh so as not to damage it getting it home.

Kind regards,

Stix

Thank you very much Roger.

This is how it's looking now. The mesh is just blu-tacked in position for the photo's. I've just noticed that horrible seam line on the fire extinguisher, although there isn't much I can do about it now it's definitely a lesson learned.

Still tweaking with bits but it's almost there and then on to the other kit I brought with me. (:
