jaguar xjr9 1/24

Recommended Posts

Griffsrw I agree this kit is great even after I cut it up it is still very easily put together and visually undertake skin it is a very close match the the real car. I also was going to try and make a xjr12 from this as a base but I actually sold that kit and the decals for the xjr12 to imraan on here, after looking at my reference pics I'm wishing I didn't now lol

right so on with my build and its all just starting to come together nicely now

good news i found the tyre decals in the box so they have been put on mostly and i made the little sprung fitting (the little red ring in the centre nut)

20150721_142124_zpsrafngfhr.jpg

the dash is almost finished

20150721_142145_zpskqem5dnf.jpg

the little control box has been painted and is in the process of having the wiring added

20150721_142138_zpsduzwr0eh.jpg

the brakes have all now been drilled out and just need painting then hopefully i can get the wheels on the floor pan

20150721_142158_zpspqaju9g8.jpg

and lastly my missus says i am a cheap b........d sometimes but with her this took the biscuit, i pinched one of the parts from my eldests toy as it is the perfect diameter for what i need

20150721_142224_zps4ao3yfyy.jpg

more soon

thanks for looking

exactly right ant

right so heres my progress after a nice dry day

this is what i wanted the kerplunk parts for, they will have quite a bit added for more realism at a later stage

20150725_200717_zpssohtreep.jpg

after looking at some really great reference pictures i have noticed that there is a secondary radiator just forward of the main one on the off side of the car and with that it seems that the opening from the outside of the car that would feed it is the wrong size but seeing as i have already done the paint theres not much i can do about it now so i have just made a box to go around it so it looks right from the inside, then coming off that i will be using more kerplunk bits for the other pipes

20150725_200734_zpsxyc78odg.jpg

the brake disks are now done to the point i am happy with

20150725_202754_zpsh9tvyxva.jpg

to go with the finished brakes i have some wheels and tyres to go with them, i just need to scrub the surface to get rid of the seem round the centre line

20150725_201120_zpsk47xr3bn.jpg

the interior is mainly finished now just need to add a few little touches

20150725_200757_zps2yjkpwsw.jpg

also i have started on details on the engine as per reference

20150725_200844_zpsubrhdd8l.jpg

i have added the gear linkage aswell, it also shows how the off side radiator will look

20150725_200925_zpsklbpfy7p.jpg

this is what the engine bay looks like now but there is alot more to be added

20150725_200858_zps6zkggknr.jpg

and last is the main body parts have been clear coated again so i should be able to progress with them within the next few days

  • 2 weeks later...

its been over a week since i have updated this wow.

thanks for the comments roger ans simon

so what has happened to this build since my last update, well it almost went in the bin due to the other half " accidentally" knocking my drying box off the side but miraculously not a single bit broke and the only real damage was in not important places and was easily touched up.

so here is most of the body after gloss

20150801_133215_zpszot0xt5u.jpg

the brakes are now finished minus a tiny bit of fettling, i didnt use the photo etch parts as they were ridiculously oversized

20150801_133336_zpskpscld58.jpg

the surrounds of the front light frames need to be green but looking at the shapes of the clear parts they look like they could be a pita to paint so i have decided to go about it this way instead

20150801_161334_zpsuyftyww8.jpg

and it hasnt turned out too bad but i will be painting the light glass aswell even if it is just the edges, oh and before i forget the actual lights have been smeared with clear orange and yellow and then been stuck to silver foil for a more real look and i have added mesh over the ducting holes to the sides as per reference material

20150803_144027_zpsuvjsurzn.jpg

as with the front ducts i have added mesh to the intakes on the side of the car

20150803_144013_zpshggdenpq.jpg

and last i have made a proper start on the rear wing, its been painted and decals have been done and now its under the box drying from a gloss coat now

20150801_161344_zpsrqgcwkpj.jpg

more soon

masking the lights is easy ive seen someone do it with two lollipop sticks attached together along with a blade, the outer stick runs around the end of the lense cover

the inner stick spaces the blade correctly then all you need to do is cover the lense with masking tape use the homemade tool to cut around the edges and then just remove the outer part of the tape.

thanks adamg1987 i think i will have to try that out on my next build that has lights

right so on with the jag

alot of the finer details are being added on the body work now due to having to wait around for other bits to dry or set

20150804_222340_zpsa5aumft2.jpg

the tyres have had the contact surface scrubbed up to get rid of the awful seem thatruns down all of tamiya tyres

20150804_222408_zpsf6zrz4wv.jpg

the offside radiator has now been finished just needs the cooling ducts and hoses added

20150805_202639_zpsmnbwraba.jpg

the final holes for the hoses have been drilled out in the engine and more wires added

20150805_202652_zpsvq803mrh.jpg

its looking a bit busier in here now

20150805_202700_zpsrvsk3mpl.jpg

one of the casualties from the otherhalfs clumsy act was the air intake stack so to remedy that i have used childs play foam sheets ( mainly for the textured look) to simulate the look of the air intakes with the cover on

20150805_202524_zpsojffubtx.jpg

and in my opinion it looks about right

20150805_202914_zpsvutkf5b3.jpg

the front end is done minus the brake cooling vents

20150805_202737_zpsd3t6foan.jpg

talking of the brake coolers i have finished the other side so i now have 2

20150805_202808_zpsuwvrzbwo.jpg

and last is the front body work which has had the lights finished and, not shown in this picture, had the floor part of it glued on

20150805_202749_zpssasadh5y.jpg

thanks for looking

Thanks for the nice word Roger and no not far to go in terms of bits to stick together but when It comes to fabricating te little bits and bobs that are absent from the engine then it will take a lot more time especially as it's the school holidays and the other half says I "have to spend time with the family" then it will probably be a few more weeks but I do have a full week off work when the little ones go back to school in September so I will be maximising that time more than now

On the spending time with family note, in my area from Thursday till Sunday this coming week the Bournemouth air festival is on and beings we live a 2 minute walk from the beach that will be taking my time up and for those that are into air displays I fully suggest you attend

Thanks Simon I have really branched out with where I get materials from on this build and funny enough the kids toys that are semi broken or have more part missing than are actually in the box have come in really handy

Thanks imraan

So not much has been done lately with the weather either raining or being so nice it would be a crime to stay indoors but I have done a few little bits that I'm quite happy with

I got the oil tank painted and wires added on to it, looking at the reference pics I have once the pipes and wire go in between the engine and the bulkhead I don't know where they go so it is easier to end them at a mid point to save messing it up

20150817_165042_zpskphdjev4.jpg

I have also modified and painted the near side radiator and added the tyre cooling duct and pipe

20150817_165024_zpsfsu4nk2z.jpg

Also I have completed the wall that goes ahead of the rear tyres and which the tyre cooling tube goes through

20150817_165012_zpsvplndn9i.jpg

And with the time that I am now not doing much I quickly did this

20150817_162116_zpsyav9m3nl.jpg

And with a couple of bits on

20150817_162301_RichtoneHDR_zpsjxv94ikh.

The last few bits that needed spraying are drying now so really thus should be done by Wednesday hopefully

Thanks for looking

Thanks for the kind words guys.

Right so it's nearing completion now just a couple of bits to add and it's done but before that here's what I've done

I have got the windscreen and the side windows in and I'm not sure why I didn't test fit these parts properly a while ago but I found the the front edge of the roof sloped to far down so I have had to carefully bend it into the correct place trying not to snap it off and glue the inside of the screen and the roof together with super glue so it stays in place

20150819_133210_zpsr8sekqoq.jpg

The rear wing endplates are finally finished and I'm glad the I cut the kit ones off and went with the etch ones as the painting would have been a right pita

20150818_121736_zpslsqalkdd.jpg

The off side air hose for the engine and inside edge of the rear tyre is now done minus a bit of silver foil

20150818_121743_zps3ceoxuzi.jpg

And now most of the engine bits are done

20150819_124217_zpsnoknxpwc.jpg

More of the engine with a few more bits added and the rear wing minus the endplates has been glued on

20150819_133229_zpsuxvw5tj4.jpg

And a last look to show how much busier it is in there now

20150819_133300_zps4hlwgqg0.jpg

More to come later and hopefully some finished shots

Right I should have saved the above post for now really as I'm calling the car done

Here's a quick picture but there will be a more comprehensive post in the rfi section

20150819_191602_zpsd2d57iqe.jpg

To those that commented, gave advice or even just looked in from time to time, I thank you and hopefully you follow my next build with the same commitment
