jaguar xjr9 1/24

Recommended Posts

So after another build has stalled I have decided to start something else and fortunately I have a couple of tamiya jag xjr9s in my stash so I have opted to do the obvious choice of the 1988 lemans champion.

So without boring to much on with the build

The box (which you have all probably seen 50 times)

20150606_195136_zpspans9kyq.jpg

I also managed to find the missing silk cut decals for a resonably price on ebay

20150606_195442_zpsqze2is8p.jpg

So on to the plastic The engine seems really tall compared to what I am used to, I would easily say that it is twice a tall as a modern f1 engine in 1/20 and this is a scale smaller

20150606_195352_zpsjjy4q5su.jpg

Just to mention through a recent purchase of another xjr9 I have an etch set for this nut it doesn't have the bits that go just ahead of the rear wheels which have the cooling hoses attached, but that didn't stop me from grinding off the very badly molded tamiya bit

20150606_195312_zpsdzbuywfs.jpg

And with a lot of reference pics and Dr.gns build of this car on here I have made my own out of plasticard

20150606_195318_zpsxiodnnri.jpg

I have made a start on the rear wing also by cutting off the end plate as it would have been a right pain to mask off for painting

20150606_195411_zpsbzfqhuid.jpg

The body has been put together as much as I want before paint, It is a lovely looking car in white

20150606_195501_zpsyggn0g1l.jpg

And lastly a quick mock up of the body engine floor and anything else I have cut off the sprues

More to come soon

Thanks for the comment Roger and you are more than welcome

The build.

Here is what I have done in the last few days

I cut the front off the car to show the radiator off and there will be a lot added to this area to replicate the real car

20150608_195915_zpsctz3jel7.jpg

As you can see in the above picture I am opening up a section to the rear of the car as it's not there in the kit but it is in the real car for the cooler behind it

The front is off and believe me it took a long time, about 2 hours in total as I didn't want to risk messing it up. I will be adding plasticard to the exposed areas of the cockpit

20150608_195923_zpsbwvqtdv5.jpg

And the front clip, I will also be cutting the front part of the floor off aswell as in reference pics it shows the whole front end is just one piece

20150608_195930_zpsl10z0sdu.jpg

When it comes to the decals it shouldn't make it much harder to do as most of them follow the panel lines on the real car

Thanks for looking

Thanks for the comments and imster honestly I have made my mind up yet between trying the way it says in the instructions with tamiya lavender or using zero paints

Thanks for the comments

Here is what I have been up to over the last week

The engine has been given a coat of silver

20150616_215027_zpskdtk7xhm.jpg

I have also boxed the area around the frontal area

20150611_170718_zpsx9hfq2rh.jpg

Here a picture of the brake cooling duct opening and a very rudimental hose made by melting an old bit of sprue, it will all look much better once finished

20150616_214947_zps62ytateb.jpg

And last a quick mock up of how it should look once done

20150616_215012_zpsyh9uf25n.jpg

More to come soon

Thanks for the kind words.

Not a lot has been done over the last few days here's a run down

The interior has been primed and sprayed gloss black

Same for the dash

The front brake cooler for the left side has been done

And last I have made up a lot of templates for the parts that are going to be carbon decalled

20150618_140710_zpskyuctdgm.jpg

More needs to be done but this is the start of it

At Le Mans at the moment. On our campsite there's a fleet of 5 XJ6's dressed in Silk Cut colours...Very amusing!

So you were on Houx too? They were supposed to be auctioning them off after a road trip apparently...

This any use to you Shaun?

Seriously guys thanks for the comments and advice.

Rich: if you have more then as many as possible please you can never have to many reference pics

So on with the build and it's been a bit slow lately due to family life and the fiddly extras I'm putting into this

So I made the decision to start the carbon work on the interior

The main section has been started but then I realised that there is some sort of access hatch to the drivers left so I stopped the decaling so I could find a decent picture of it to find out what sort of bits need doing

20150621_144614_zpsalqjuefx.jpg

And also I have started on the dash which has to different styles of carbon

20150621_151220_zpsjohjsni2.jpg

I'll be honest a lot of micro sol was used to get it flat but it's almost there now

More soon shaun

Shaun: Double click the photo and you'll get into the album. I probably have more that I can add - when I get home.

Vontrips: A very sensible Mondeo estate with roof box!!!! We were "kicked off" Maison Blanc this year on the basis the site was under construction (Porsche Centre) but they used it for the Classic support paddock and there were still some camping there. However, I think Houx actually has the edge, if a little more involved in getting in and out in the car...

Thanks rich they are a big help

Right so on with the build

This is my almost finished brake cooling duct and hose

20150623_095447_zpsiw9ooxqz.jpg

The front radiator has been painted and I have also drilled out the holes for a wire or tubing to go in it

20150625_173631_zpsyhjse7cx.jpg

The floor pan has been painted black ready for the huge amounts of carbon decals to go on

20150625_173645_zpscjqljfyn.jpg

The floor with the radiator

20150625_174307_zpspygg7vvo.jpg

Now moving on to the interior

The dash just needs a few more details

20150625_173816_zpscedhzaya.jpg

The seat has been painted and had carbon kevlar decal added to the back

20150625_173747_zpsz2be9nus.jpg

The interior floor bit has been fully carboned

20150625_173801_zpsfafwh5cn.jpg

The rear bulkhead has been carboned on one side and painted silver on the other

20150625_173704_zpsfevr7zi5.jpg

And lastly as you will have probably seen in a previous post I cut off the front end so at some stage I had to find a way to have it reconnect, after looking at rich's many pictures I decided that jags way was good enough so,

I put some pins into the front part of the body

20150625_174126_zpsbgrdpsys.jpg

And I put some holes into the body

20150625_174202_zpsyy5ihwgs.jpg

And this is how it should look when done

20150625_174235_zpsqdvt1u2l.jpg

I will be putting 2 more connectors on the front splitter and the floor pan just in front of the radiator just for a bit more strength

Today's job is to carbon most of the floor pan, it should only take a few hours lol

Thanks for looking

Thanks for the comment logical it would have been nice to have been with him at the track back then seeing these monster go round

Right so now what I have done and just to warn you its not much

The floor pan is taking a lot of my time with these carbon bits but I suppose in the end it will be worth it

20150630_132330_zps23mz0bsx.jpg

The wheels are being done now and then it's finally time to get some paint on to the body

Thanks for looking

  • 2 weeks later...

A small update

I have painted the valve covers and detailed the jag logo

20150709_145715_zpsjeijgarh.jpg

The gear box has been painted (no sure about the colour it's what tamiya says to do)

20150709_145723_zps9gkzwsmw.jpg

And the main body has been primed and has its first coat of white laid down

20150709_145758_zpsxqb3ocy9.jpg

Progress is slow so I don't know when the next update will be
