Bismark and Tirpitz - Photo Etch Detail Sets for Revell Kits

1:700 Eduard

It feels like ages ago that Revell released their 1:700 Bismark and Tirpitz kits, although a quick check reveals it was only five or so years ago. While the kits failed to herald the dawn of a new era of 1:700 scale new tools from the German manufacturer, they are excellent kits nonetheless, albeit lacking the waterline option which makes the scale so popular. As with any small-scale ship, there are an awful lot of fine details that cannot be replicated satisfactorily in injection moulded plastic. That's where Eduard step in.

Bismark

Eduard's set for Bismark includes a range of small detail parts including the usual full set of railings and stairways, as well as cable reels, ladders and anti-aircraft guns. The railings feature a constant lower rail rather than individual stanchions, which will make them easier to fix to the model. Also included on the fret are larger parts such as cranes, davits and the catapult for the aircraft. The Arado itself receives a new propeller, and details for the searchlights, masts and turrets are also included. There are a couple of surprising omissions such as anchors, anchor chains and parts for the ship's boats, but overall this is a pretty comprehensive set.

Tirpitz

As you would expect of a set designed for the Bismark's sister ship Tirpitz, this is very, very similar to the set reviewed above. The differences are pretty much confined to some small changes to the type and number of cable reels and cranes, although I'm sure the experts might spot a few more subtle changes.

Conclusion

Nothing finishes a model warship off better than a set of fine photo etched parts. In this set Eduard have included almost everything you could want to complete the two Revell kits, from the railings down to the cable reels. If you have either of these kits, then these sets can be recommended.
