„BISMARCK“ – German’s battleship 1941 – 1/200 by Trumpeter, Pontos, …

**** UPDATE ****
Now we are working on the paint of the rear super structure...
First step again - a black primer (Valleyo black primer) to give it a homogeneous surface... The black primer als acts as a first kind of dark shadow under the later grey painting .....

dsc_7391_1024x678c8q9o.jpg
After some drying time all the parts were painted in light grey - same grey as the super structure at the front .... I made 2 thin layers, still keeping the black primer shining through the grey... These are the first shadows in the surface, more coming later with the washings.

(the upper part of the funnel - still only black primer. Aluminium and smoke following later)

Next step.... Masking. With tons of masking tape, a ruler and more masking tape I started to mask the superstructure for painting the white and black stripes. Orientating at the stripes on the hull... Going up and up and up on the super structure. On the picture you see the masking for the white stripes. After painting the white stripes then I have masked it one more time and painted the black stripes too.

dsc_7410_1024x6788epoi.jpg
And here we have the finished and demasked super structure... After some correction works with a fine brush and all three colors......

dsc_7418_1024x678vcr4z.jpg

And that's how it looks now... All put together .....

dsc_7439_1024x678h7r5u.jpg
dsc_7440_1024x6788pqy8.jpg
The next step.... Adding the wooden deck and the dark grey metal deck parts.... Then giving all a layer of clear coat (future - as already done on the front super structure), then starting with oil colors and dry brushing.... Then a final layer of clear coat matt.
So far for now ....

you make this type of work look so easy.. I've got to admit that I have never stopped to consider how a modeller would produce the striped camo scheme around so much 3 dimensional superstructure detail - but now I know and I have to take my hat off to you as the effect you have produced is commendable and far beyond my patience levels

Keep Calm and Bismarck On

Thanks for the tutorial, I am mightily impressed that all your etch stayed on! That is what would worry me is taking off the masking and finding all that etch still attached to the tape! Love the paint work, very impressed the stripes line up perfectly!

Once the black/white stripes were finsihed, all parts of the superstructure received a layer of Future as sealing before the weathering.

Then a first washing with highly thinned black oil color follows... then one with brown oil color... the woode decks received also one washing with light grey oil colors.

After a little drybrushing a layer of mattlack followed.

The parts of the superstructure is ready for the next steps now ....

Next steps.... glazing of the windows.... then painting of the details (hoses, signal lamps, ...).... then mounting the super structure on the main deck.... floor by floor... and adding stairways, handrails and further details ....

Hi Michael

You certainly seem to be in control of your build - a superb job so far. All that additional / corrective detailing added to the superstructure really makes the difference.

At the time, it had to go to the bottom for obvious reasons, but in many ways and for the sake of Naval enthusiasts, its a shame either the Tirpitz or Bismarck did not survive the war and get preserved as they were iconic designs.

Several parts of the kit were replaced by Pontos etched parts. The catapult is made of etched and turned brass parts. One side remains in standart position, the other side in extended position.

Also the two bridges were made of pe parts new... consisting of several very small parts too :)

All parts were painted before being glued in position:

Next step - floor by floor, parts being glued on the main deck, railways, stairs and other small parts added .... stairs painted 2-color, steps in dark grey, sides in grey/white. All equipment on the captains bridge were painted grey/black-grey, some signs were added in yellow, white or black on different equipments and on chests.

Also several furher details on the walls were added suchas life-rings, pipes, etc. The windows received their glasses too....

Great work, certainly and enjoyable build to watch.

I presume you've seen all the great close up photos here: https://www.bild.bundesarchiv.de/ which look to be very useful for the 1:200 Bismarck build detail.

(Search in search box with 'Schlachtschiff'. This returns 741 images, in date order, go to the end for the later ships using >>, and work back through the pages and images using <, to see loads of great on-board and inside close up photos. There are so many close up detailed photos, it's like stepping back in time and having a tour round the Bismarck).
