Dear friends,
Our 1/72 "Heavy MiGs" series continues with the powerful Ye-152M experimental interceptor. The kit comes with photo-etched plate, adhesive masks, K-80 missiles, 1500 L external fuel tank, few variants of wingtips, open canopy and a pair of canard forewings. I would be interested in the Speed Record version "Ye-166" which was an E-152-1, but... is it the one in the box???? Anybody some more info on the record flight?

I find it quite confusing because the E-152-2 with "E166" on the nose in Monino is always shown when I search for the record but it clearly is the sister ship, although I like the speedy livery and the blown canopy:

The 'Ye-166' at Monino is actually the Ye-152M painted to look like the record-breaking Ye-166.

Modelsvit already do the Ye-152M.......

e-152m_21.jpg

They have now done the Ye-150, Ye-152A and Ye-152M..............

The new Ye-152-1 completes the lineup....... I wish they would re-release the Ye-152M with Ye-166 markings.

Really wanted to do my kit of the Ye-152M with the foreplanes and wingtip missiles but couldn't find evidence of it existing in that configuration. If Flankerman Ken says it happened thats evidence enough for me :)

I couldn't find any photographic evidence of it having flown with the canards - so mine is a bit of a 'What if?'

Yefim Gordons 'Soviet Heavy Interceptors' (Vol 19 in the Red Star series) has a photo of a model of the Ye-152M with canards and raked wingtip launch rails/winglets (supplied in the kit).

He also says.... "The canards fitted originally were soon removed, leaving only prominent fairings on the forward fuselage sides where they had been"

The same book has four colour photos of the Ye-152M fitted with wingtip missiles as in my model - but without the canards.

(...)

Does "painted to look like the record-breaking Ye-166" mean that the Ye-166 during the record flight was painted in the same livery as Ye-152M at Monino?

Or that the Monino Ye-152M was just given a high-speed-livery to look like a record holder?

Nice builds!

The Ye-152A should look VERY interesting when placed next to the Trumpeter Shenyang F-8-II :)

Cross-kitting of these two should produce the exact copy of J-8-I, as I still don't believe the Chinese have built it having no the Ye-152A blueprints...

Cheers

Rene,

I think I am confusing myself re the Ye-152M and Ye-166 - I think they were one and the same aircraft.

From Red Star 19.....

"Upon completion of the flight test program the Ye-152M was put on static display at the airshow at Domodedovo on 9 July 1967. It bore the inscription 'E-166' in Cyrillic and three red stars signifying the three world speed records set by the Ye-152-1, accompanied by details of each record. The bogus Ye-166 designation was a typical example of Soviet cover-up and misinformation in the Cold War days. It was used to register the aircraft with the FAI for the speed record attempts. After the show the aircraft was donated to the Soviet Air Force museum in Monino - where it is on display to this day."

So, it was the Ye-152-1 that gained the speed records - but it was the Ye-152M that pretended to get them - disguised as the Ye-166.

It looks like the Soviet misinformation worked!!

According to the refs I consulted, the J8 was a wholly indigenous design - bearing only a resemblance to the MiG Ye-152A.

The dimensions are different - but it would make a great project - go for it!!

It's more like a MiG-21 (J7) on steroids!!

My pics of the J8 - taken in 2010....

So the record flights of Ye-152-1 probably took place in no special livery. Ye-152-2 was painted in the record seter scheme after the test program ended and I found no pics of Ye-152-1 in any other livery than aluminum all over.

Found some info here:

Seen on display at Brovary model exhibition 2018 the heavy MiGs including the test model of E-152-1 kit.

I'm building a Shenyang F-8-II at the moment and have thought what would be best to cross-kit, as it don't look as easy as it should be.... it is something I really want to do though.

Well there goes my plans for a nice, simple, out-of-the-box project. Anyone know who stocks this in the UK?
