1:350 HMS Kent without extras.... sort of!

Recommended Posts

If I ever win the lottery then I'm going to employ someone to do this uploading bit in the future.

Hiya folks, so that Warren can get a peaceful nights sleep :sleep_1: , here is my HMS Kent, It is out of the box with only the addition of some Eduard railings, wherever they are!

Glue; EMA Plastic weld with a 00 brush.

Primer; Halfords (UK) Acrylic grey.

Paint; Humbrol 127 for everything you can lean against, Humbrol 164 for everything you can sleep on, Revell 36 for the big red bottom, Alclad II Brass for the spinny underneath bits.

The Lynx will be painted as per the Airfix 1/48 HMA8 kit which I've ended up starting because I opened the box for the paint plan! Humbrol 165 and 31 :oops: .

Weapon of choice; Swann Morton No.3 handle with a No.10 blade.

Really lovely kit of a really lovely ship. No real fit issues other than the deck structures are a little tight but nothing that a scalpel swipe won't deal with. From what I can see between the Internet and the walkround section, this is as good a representation of HMS Kent as I need it to be.

I bought it during the easter holiday when I was back home visiting my folks. I like to pop into Ayr Model Centre and buy something just because he's there. Not much point in moaning about the shops closing if I don't support them! This was the cheapest kit that I was interested in and the owner dropped the price a few quid because he knows that I do this.

I had no intention of building it anytime soon, but my nephew had never seen a model kit before and was a bit blown away by it. (even more so when I produced my Nagato which I had taken with me! :yikes: )

So I'm gonna surprise him with it later this year! :gobsmacked: Mind you, it might fall flat as it's not a computer! :doh:

Some early bits and bobs ready for paint. Improvised reamer for the funnel caps. Stretched sprue handrails will be attached to both.

Didn't take too long to get here! Large, medium and small parts done, It's the extra small bits that will take time.

Some nice detail here.

DSC_0441_zpsjtq90yqg.jpg

Nicely molded but I think would benefit from some etched doors, these look a bit soft.

DSC_0442_zps1g4sbaig.jpg

More nice detail.

Hangar roof, I've used silver on white to hopefully provide something to look at despite the fact that I doubt you could see it on the finished model. Didn't waste any time here.

Right then, that'll do for now, Next group of piccies will show a little bit of colour, albeit grey. :hmmm:

Hugs'n'stuff!

Jockster.

The above post has taken me 4 hrs to do. Let's see if I'm on a roll! :bounce:

I sprayed the Dark Sea Grey 164 first as it looked (and was!) much easier and quicker to mask the flat deck areas followed by the US Ghost Grey 127 up the sides. The masts are bare until they are finished. Having a little bit of mojo loss with the photo etched brass.

DSC_0484_zpsmczzrjaj.jpg

Spinny things for underneath. I primed the props with Humbrol Matt Black then dipped them in Klear a few times. left them a couple of days to cure then on with the Alclad. I may have to give them another light pass with the brass!

I gave the domes on the fire control radar a couple of passes with white while I was spraying the the main radomes. Just wanted a little variation in shade to attract the eye.

(I used blu-tac to mask them)

The black didn't look right on the rotors prompting me to open the Airfix kit for the paint plan. I need to repaint these Humbrol 31 Slate Grey. Even handier that I'm using that very same colour on the big Lynx. Doh. The Lynx itself is Humbrol 165 Medium Sea Grey. I needed to cut a little piece of card for the main gun. When the turret is assembled it's a bit of an untidy view to the breech end so this covers the hole. (on the inside.) The other stuff isn't painted yet.

And this is where I'm at.

Wow, that only took half an hour to post. Gives me some modeling time. Now then, !/350 Kent or 1/48 Lynx :bye:

P.S. Nothing is glued down yet, The deck and houses are all loose.

Holy S$$T!!! Jockster!! You posted some pictures!! (Tears of joy run down cheeks)... It's just.. so... beautiful.. to... see someone learning something new...

And you are doing a great job on the model as well! You will have mojo fails with the Trumpeter PE as it is too thin. I have left over WEM stuff from the mast if you would like it.. Much thicker and easier to use.

Cheers mate

Ta muchly Warren, I'll be fine with the brass once I get started, As soon as that first piece is on I'll be back on track. We all go through it I suppose. Plenty of other bits to be getting on with in the meantime!

As for posting pics, every day is a school day!

Hiya Beefy, I'm not usually so productive but two things have gone in my favour. This kit almost builds itself with very little clean up required and I have been forced into taking a half hour lunch break at work so that's a certain 2.5 hours of guaranteed modeling each week.

Easy least!

Thank you kindly BerndM, if you're going to build a modern ship then they don't come much easier than this. The photoetch is very thin and requires a bit of care but other than that it's a straight forward build with no fit issues at all. A very enjoyable kit indeed.

Ship modelling with PE stuff is always fiddly. Got some nice kits in 1/700 in my stash.

Your build is really looking sharp, will follow this.

Happy modelling

Yep tis a lot of ship and no mistake.

Nice work Jocko.

Cleaning up the burrs on PE is the worst, but once you have the tools its not so hard.
Some good small head pliers doe's the trick.

Googh on you matey.

foxy :coolio:

Thanks Frank, the best tools I've found for photoetch is a pair of Xuron pliers and a whetstone. The stone is so smooth that it never snags the way a file or sandpaper does.

I've got to say that Victory has been a stunning build to follow, very enjoyable and very educational. I'm still planking the hull on mine but that's a real long termer!

Thanks Paul, but you are adding plenty of scratchbuilding to yours, if I was doing the same I'd be nowhere near painting yet.

  • 2 weeks later...

Hopefully this weekend will see some more pictures posted as I've changed my mind and sprung for Peter Hall's Type 23 set. What a nice bloke, spoke to him on Wednesday and my parcel turned up yesterday! Fantastic looking set and it seems a shame to cut it up!

I opted for the set because as soon as I saw the flightdeck netting on Warren's build I knew I had to follow the same path.

Anyway, gotta go for now, etch mojo suddenly came back with a vengeance!

Cheerzen!

Not a very productive weekend due to real life but there are some changes to HMS Kent.

As I said above, I sprung for Peters Type 23 set and I'm delighted with the content;

DSC_0526_zpszvftwpoi.jpg

Straight away I had myself stripping back the kit Harpoon launchers and adding the etched frames'

DSC_0536_zpss1bkqxvy.jpg

Then I added the self righting frames to the RIBs, there are two tiny boxes moulded to the inside rear or the boat, remove these and the frames will sit nicely;

Boxes removed;

DSC_0534_zpssa1untuk.jpg

Then I added the rudders, props and etched stern rails as well as a ladder on the rear of the 4.5" turret and painted some black details;

DSC_0538_zpsokuqt3a3.jpg

Then it was time to take care of what was becoming my nemesis, the foremast! Bent/straightened/bent/straightened/bent straightened seemed to be the pattern that I was following, however, today was the day to kick it all into touch and hopefully this will remain intact for the rest of the build! The four yards are still the Trumpeter items but with the support stays from the Atlantic set.

And this is where I've left her for the evening!

DSC_0543_zps6vmtj9af.jpg

I may even post something in the wingy thingy WIP side tonight!
