Merit X - Craft Build

I'd love to get one if these, and wonder if the diving planes/rudder can be flipped 90' as for the prop there may be a similar brass one that can be found at somewhere like Cornwall model boats. With an example or two in British museums it makes one wonder if Merit ever actually Checked them out.

Dug a little deeper, seems rear end is configured right as far as rudder/ diving planes go, see pics from submarine museum Gosport, checked my photos in books i have of the x-craft and they are all in this config, the photo on the link of an x craft with 90 deg flip looks like a big mistake by the restorers. Will have to dig deeper.

Just finished digging deeper, HMS stickleback is the example in duxford, bit of a conumdrum as photos of this x-craft, a later model shows the same configuration, except diagonal braces replaced with hoop type and possibly larger prop, see Swedish navy slide show in link below.

So does anyone have a clue as to whats gone on at Duxford?

Update, no reply from IWM yet other than acknowledgement of message sent, all the reference material I have and the digging I have done all point to one thing, the example in Duxford has the rudder and dive planes installed wrongly by 90 degrees. The x-craft at Gosport and Chatham both have the split rudder and one piece dive plane, all drawings available show exactly the same.

The footage from Sweden of HMS Stickleback being craned shows her with the same configuration, but not as she is on display at Duxford.

So awaiting IWM response.

All the best Chris

My example arrived yesterday morning, and very nice it is too. I'm with Chris on the rudder/diveplane orientation. The kit is correct, the Duxford example seems an anomaly.

No need to hurry.

I'd expect the release of italeri's model, and was a bit disgusted when they decided to drop it.

Now I'm really interested in this Meritt product.

Certainly because of the book?

Hi all finally got a reply from the IWM, see below;

Dear Mr King

Thank you for your enquiry.

I'm afraid that HMS Stickleback is no longer part of the collection at IWM Duxford and has in fact has been gifted to the Museum of the Royal Navy. We would advise you to contact the submarine museum in Gosport : https://www.submarinemuseum.co.uk/ who should be able to help you with your enquiry.

Yours sincerely

Deborah Mason

so will drop a line to Gosport.

Chris

see e-mail sent to submarine museum below;

Hi I have been trying to get resolved the question of the rudder and dive plane configuration of HMS Stickleback as displayed at Duxford, please see below. As a submarine modeller and member of the Britmodeller forum the recent release of the merit 1/35 scale X-craft raised a few questions concerning this as a few modellers declined this model based on the Duxford display example.
It would be most helpful if you could confirm my suspicions that the rear arrangement was displayed rotated 90 degrees off what it should have been. The great example already on display with yourselves and Chatham seem to bear this out along with other documentation and photos.
regards Chris King

Hello everyone. I've just ordered one of these kits; it's not normally my area of interest but having friends who were heavily involved in some of the attempts to locate X5, I couldn't resist!

I'm interested in what shade of grey people are using for their subs?

Hi all just received this, the clincher from Gosport Submarine Museum.

Dear Mr King,

Your email has been sent to me as I look after the artefact collection. HMS Stickleback is currently in storage in Portsmouth Dockyard and I have not as yet had the chance to view it. I have managed to find a photograph of the submarine from when it was on display at Duxford:

http://www.flickriver.com/photos/sarge_schultz/2352041221/

I have checked photographs in the Archive and they all show Stickleback in the water and not the rudder arrangement. However, I have also checked the photographs of the X-craft (X5 class) and you are correct the rudder arrangement is different. Please see attached photograph. Unfortunately the Encyclopaedia of British Submarines does not note why this is, but if I manage to find an answer in our library I will let you know.

I think we can safely say that you are correct in your observations.

If you have any further queries please do not hesitate to contact me.

Kind regards,

Alexandra Geary

Hi Mike in answer to your query the colour is either black or a very dark ocean grey, suggest you check plans with model as to what is recommended as the one is Gosport is a black finish, see photos earlier in thread.

Click on the links and you will see the build undertaken of this model finished in a matt black, appears grey due to lighting, best guess having built a few submarines myself.

Thanks Chris. Still waiting for the kit to arrive, but will see what it says. It was just that I've seen model X craft finished in everything from quite a light grey to full on black, and am struggling at this early stage to find any meaningful reference!

Nice one Chris :goodjob:

I don't know the size of the propeller but if it needs to be changed here are a couple of possible sources

This one accepts commissions if the don't have the right size/style
