Alpha Delta 210
Hi I know this is a potential can of worms, but can anyone suggest what colour I should paint the window frames and doors on a late-war representation of a non-camouflaged USAAF control tower in East Anglia? I have done a lot of web research and found quite a few period B&W pictures which seem to indicate a darker colour than the cement/render of the walls. Best guesses - dark grey or green (or perhaps something more exotic)!? Thanks in anticipation.
Edgar
I have no idea if they're still available, but Midland Counties, around 25-30 years ago, produced (at least) two books on airfield buildings.
Phil Podmore
Parham Airfield Museum has an original tower (although repainted now) that was original in the 80's/90's http://www.parhamairfieldmuseum.co.uk/
Mitch K
Where I grew up (Norfolk), there were still large numbers of USAAF buildings in their original (if rather weathered) paint when I was a kid. They were all, to the best of my recollection, the horrible, manky mid-green colour you can see in the link Phil Podmore posted. Anywhere the paint had flaked or worn, red oxide primer was visible. I suspect (but could not confirm) that any apparent differences in colour are a result of the substrate it was applied over (red-primed metal, wood, brick, cement render...) than the paint itself. old thumper
Maybe a look a youtube would answer this question, they have some very useful wartime colour footage that can help with this kind of thing.
