kwaterous
Pure silliness is what this is. I've already got far too many projects on the go. There's my Non-Injection Moulded GB Pucara, my failed Bf110 GB entry that's almost done, and my recently restarted whiffery. So I decided to start another project Revell's 1:72 Sopwith Triplane is ancient - older than me by a long shot. I got one through my cadet squadron (which is named after Collishaw's plane**) and that's where this build will go when it's finished. It'll be pretty much OOTB, and hopefully pretty quick, as I'd like to have it finished by the 24th (this is hard because I build very very, very slowly most of the time) Anyway, I took one look at the pilot, bye bye buster... Bland cockpit (if you can call it that) it is. There's not even a control stick or an instrument panel. I might fix those, but that's it (or maybe not ) Enough waffling about, there's a picture (just one) of my progress. This consists of a lot of base painting, and a bit of hole-filling* in the wings, and a little bit of sticky stuff* on the two parts of the tail. Here it is: The aluminum stuff is going to need another coat. Also, wood-graining on the prop HELP!! How do I do this? Brandy
For wood grain in 1:72 I paint the part in a light buff enamel colour (normally Radome tan, but darker can be used for very dark finishes), then when that's dry, I use an acrylic "leather" colour, not stirred properly, and brush it on thinly so you can still see the base colour. When it's dry, give it a coat of Tamiya clear orange. Here's how it looks on the inside of the Short 184 I'm building... Use long strokes and don't brush it back and forth. If you don't like it, you can either just wipe it off (you did use an enamel base, right?) or let it dry, paint it tan again, and try again! It's a very quick and simple method and looks fine in the small scale. Ian Edited May 11, 2015 by limeypilot
heloman1
Nice thing to know, I'm not alone. I was away last week so took four kits, a bike part started, which never got looked at! Two 72nd aircraft, again neither got looked at, well the Buccaneer I looked at the instructions. The fourth, another Wessex, which I did do some work on but we returned sooner than expected, so my building time was cut short. So net result one half started project... Nice big ejector pin marks you've to fill there! Colin
kwaterous
Thanks for that Ian, I'll give that technihe a try today. I think way too many builds at once is just a thing with most modellers. I confess, the ejector pin marks aren't actually that big, but I don want to have to go back and refill them, a I went overkill Cheers, K
Black Knight
There are soooooo many techniques, all good, for doing wood. For my props I first paint the blades Humbrol 10 [dark] brown in enamel, then whilst thats wet I use a fine brush to paint on Humbrol 9 tan acrylic, and maybe a bit of 103 cream or 61 flesh [just a bit of either]. I only paint the lighter colours in the direction of hub to tip, using only a few strokes of the brush.
Jessica
My wood technique wouldn't do you much good for this build given that it involved oil paints. First, as mentioned above, use a light tan base coat. You can play about until you find one you like, and then vary it a bit to achieve different wood tones. Use an acrylic base coat, or brush on a clear acrylic barrier, because oil paint eats enamel for breakfast if you put it on without the barrier coat. Brush on the oil paint straight from the tube using a wide, flat coarse "rake brush" to get the wood grain effect. it takes about a week or so to dry so this is nothing to fool around with when you're in a hurry Here's the interior of a Nieuport 11 is did a while ago using this technique: I used the same technique with the interplane struts and the propeller
kwaterous
Thanks for the tips everyone. I'm not quite at that point yet, but I think I know what I'm going to do* for the prop. To continue the one picture updates, most stuff base painted, things that needed a second coat have gotten it*. As you may notice, OOTB has failed, I've made up an IP and a control stick. Exterior bits are going to need another coat, but I thought I'd get started. Cheers, K *two rather strained Dble-E's, fnarr fnarr

bbudde
Oh, pure coolness!!!? The old Revell's are fancy and irresistable.
kwaterous
Thanks guys, I wouldn't call them fancy, troublesome is more like it. They are fun though K
kwaterous
Well, my OOTB plan has gone out of the window IP and what will become a control stick. I don't plan to go any further*. But my self control when it comes to detailing is rather lacking. Cheers, K *Dbl-E, score 1 fnarr fnarr Edited May 12, 2015 by kwaterous
kwaterous
Well, it's time for another update, and it's the biggest one yet*! (A whole 5 photos) I'm pretty much ready to close up the fuselage, just waiting for paint to dry. Enamel paints are nice, but they do have some drawbacks Also decided to do a little conversion work, very simple conversion work. Conversion work with black paint. (It's going to be black flight if you haven't guessed) Anyway, enough waffling My scratchbuilt cockpit parts installed And they've been painted. Also shown is my paint issue. I tried to get another coat of paint on, it worked on the rear stabilizer an one of the mid wings, but started to orange peel on the top wing, then just crazed, so I wiped it off. AARGH The lower of the two mid wings is the one where the paint worked. Also got the pale base coat on the prop. I think it looks neat* Black flight "conversion" work Last bit of conversion work that I've done. Paint the wheels completely black. No masking needed this time, I could get used to this Anyway, I'm mad at my paint right now, but also feeling ok with my progress so far Cheers, K *Dbl-E, Score 2(?), fnarr fnarr
heloman1
I continued with my latest bout of silliness over the weekend and up until yesterday. Working on the Italeri Wessex 1, that I took away with me last week. Now some of you may remember and before I got diverted by the Airfix Merlin to an HM2 sometime last year. I had a in deapth Wessex correction/detail build on the go. I suppose, I should have carried on with that but hey isn't there a certain level of satisfaction on opening a new kit and cutting parts off the sprue and cracking on? So I suppose I had better take some pics, and get a build thread going... Colin

kwaterous
Little bit got done last night*. A bunch of bits got stuck together, and it sortof looks like a plane now Seatbelt decal that came with the kit, not a very good fit*, but oh well. Two halves become a whole... Prop wood grain is done. Not bad for my first try methinks*. Filler there's going to be a lot of it needed on this build. Bottom wing and front bit got put on. More filler. Current state of play. I'm getting ahead of myself a bit on the tail. I tried to add the decals, but they fit like, well, they just don't. kwaterous
More (slow) progress from me. The start if he CDL on the underside. I traced the ribs in starpie beforehand Once the paint dried, I have I a coat of future. Next, I'll add another coat of my CDL mix, and hopefully, the sharpie won't bleed through, leaving me with slightly highlighted ribs. Same thing was done on the tail. Also chopped off the misshaped machine gun barrel end and replaced with wire. kwaterous
This will be a big update from me, it's got 2 days off worth of work in it My plan for the CDL worked nicely. No more work needed here. Wood grained the struts Little dab of filler ~time passes~ Top "camo" done Masking is a pain. It does this: And this; Crap photo sorry ~time passes~ Black bits and cockpit surround painted Also did the machine gun Aluminum mixed with black made a colour that looked about right ~time passes~ Decals!! Top wing (no future on these yet) Fuselage. The serial numbers took 20 mins to get right. It's the kit "N5493" with the 3 cut off and that part of the decal turned over. Next, I took the 2 and 12 decal markers, and added them. To make things even more complicated, the 2 from the 12 broke in 2, and I didn't have any other the same size, so I pasted it together. The 2 bottoms founders were also done, but I forgot to take a picture. That's my enormous update... 10 photos... Massive eh? Cheers, K
heloman1
Come on Colin, we want to see this Wessex K Hi K, whip taken not of and request complied with. As of yesterday morning, their is new thread in the WIP section. Colin
kwaterous
Last update: it's been a quick build, and fun too Outer struts and badly hand-painted "Black Maria" Inner struts It would have been a wicked cool biplane... But they made it a triplane instead. My poor attempt at redoing the masking tape's damage to the tail decal (it's a decal, what is this transfer business?) Landing gear struts... With wheels on them The big reveal: (These photos were taken on the kitchen table, with my phone. I'll try to get some better ones later) Cheers, K
