DaveJL
Hello all,Here is my entry for the GB: a 1/48 Hasegawa F-4E in the markings of the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force. I chose this scheme as I read an article in a magazine a few months ago which discussed how IRIAF F-4E's had been attacking Islamic state fighters. The kit:The aftermarket:I'll be using True Details cockpit, True Details pylon set, Steel Beach FOD guards and FCM decals. I'd also like to add an Airwaves canopy set if i can get one.Great reference material:Plan to load her up with 4x AGM-65 Maverick and 6x Mk-82 bombs, which I hopefully have in the spares Dave
modelling minion
Great choice! Expect some interest from Tom Cooper as this is right up his street, he is also extremely helpful if you need any info or help. I look forward to seeing this one come together. Craig. Ghostbase
Nice choice, I was hoping to see an IRIAF Phantom in this GB in 1/48 scale and the FCM decals should help give a good result. Michael
Diego
Good choice indeed - the IRIAF Phantoms had a long combat career all over the years. IMHO, a sharkmouthed Iranian F-4E would be even more spectacular... Greetings Diego
XV571
Great choice Dave, I really like the Asia Minor scheme and it'll go nicely with the Israeli F-4 you built a while back. As an alternative to the American hardware you could use a couple of pairs of BL755 cluster bombs instead as the IRIAF regularly carried these during the Iraqi conflict. Be wary of the Modellers Data File F-4 books though, there are a lot of errors in them. Be especially aware of the pictures of the IRIAF F-4s on page 35 - you might recognise them here: http://www.arcair.com/Gal3/2601-2700/Gal2652-IranianAC-Shammas/00.shtm. A very useful book is Osprey's Combat Aircraft vol 37 co-written by the aforementioned Tom Cooper and Farzad Bishop. Also don't forget Airliners.net - there are a lot of stunning Iranian F-4 photos listed there. HTH, Jonathan
DaveJL
Thanks for all the comments and info chaps! At the minute I'm planning 4x AGM-65's and 6x MK82 on TER's on the outer pylons, with 4 AIM-7 under the fuselage. Seen a few pictures of similar loads on the web and elsewhere so i'll go for that! The pictures on page 35 in the book look so real, hard to believe they're models! Dave

DaveJL
Cheers mate, hope i can do it justice in that case! Having a hard time tracking down the suitable colours from my preferred maker (model master acrylic) though!
DaveJL
Made a brief start this morning. Cleaned up and sprayed the True Details cockpit, ready for detailing: Wings assembled: Intakes and nose section added to the fuselage: Ordnance built up: The AGM-65's and MK-82's are from Hasegawa weapons sets and the 2x AIM-7's are from the spares. More soon. Dave
DaveJL
Brief update. Cockpit ready to be installed. The detail isn't too bad, but a bit soft in areas: Once that was dry, i installed it and closed up the fuselage and added the wings. True Details say to cut away the glare shield which i did but it leaves a huge gap around the front instrument panel and shroud which i've had to load up with filler. Next up is to tidy up the filler then add the last few bits and pieces before priming. Dave
nimrod54
Nice work as usual Dave, good detail painting in the pit.
DaveJL
Cheers mate. Just hope the mess around the front IP cleans up ok!
Mozzy19
Nice work Dave. There's always the backup option of making a cover for the canopy ie a sun shade type thing. Hope that makes sense... Sean
DaveJL
Cheers Sean. Yes, know what you mean, hopefully won't need to do that!
DaveJL
More done, and she's ready for masking and primer! Once all the filler was cleaned up (filler needed was my fault, not the models!) i added the True Details pylons along with the launchers for the AGM-65's and the MER for the MK82's. The muzzle break for the M61 was added and the kit was given a tiny up: I'm pleased to say the mess around the windshield cleaned up nicely. The coaming has been painted, detailed and the windshield itself has been added and masked off. Kit will be primed tonight and i'm hoping to start painting tomorrow. A few sub assemblies are also ready: More soon. Dave

DaveJL
Cheers. Hoping to have the paint completed by the weekend. Dave
DaveJL
Painting has started. Just need to add the green then paint the undersides. Pictures later in the week. In the meantime, the rest of the sub assemblies are ready. The AGM-65's and AIM-7's just need gloss in preparation for decals: The seats are also ready, just need to be cut away from their casting blocks. The detail on them is fairly soft compared to the likes of Quickboost. More soon. Dave

DaveJL
More to show. Painting has been completed,a coat of gloss added in preparation for decals and most of the masking removed. I've also added the FOD covers: The metallic areas on the horizontal stabilisers looks a bit shiny but this will hopefully darken with a wash, weathering and a flat coat. Just a few bits of detailed painting to add here and there (landing gear wells, cockpit and pylons). Once the decals are on, she should be finished pretty quickly. More soon. Diego
Looking very sharp, Dave!!! Just one question - shouldn't the brown color be a bit more darker? Or it's the light on the photos, as it looks like the "tan" used on the S.E.A.(Vietnam) scheme... Greetings Diego
