Airfix 1/72 Lancaster Dambuster Charity build

Recommended Posts

dms1_zpswtlpxgkq.jpg

I thought it was time for another Charity build for Little Havens in Memory of my little Daughter Daisy. The kit has been kindly donated by AngstROM. It will be built as Gibsons Aircraft and Auctioned off on eBay. I have a page open for any donations too. No amount is too small!

Kit has arrived so i will be starting this one this evening. Now i already have a question for the Lancaster Experts. I believe i am correct in thinking that these were brand new build Lancasters and were converted on the production line. Would the cockpits therefore be completely black or the usual black and interior green?

Looks good. No I think the interior was not modified for that mission. Why should they for a low level raid. You hear them clearly, before you can see them at all. And above the lake they switched on their full lights to get the exact level to drop the upkeep mine.

And as I was born near the lake Möhne, I would like to post a link to another built one here: http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234974511-birthday-lancaster-airfix-172-dambusters-b-iii-special/page-2

At least, I think the colour of the mine was green and not black, but I don't know. You see both colors on models

Oh, not for that: Here is another link to get more fever: http://englisheyeimages.blogspot.co.uk/2013/05/heres-great-video-clip-taken-from-raf.html

For the mine colour: http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_TGS61dlat8U/S639whd2j6I/AAAAAAAACf0/dHfFGC2hr90/s1600/Upkeep+bomb.jpg

And a good help to get it as good as possible for a charity auction:http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234931795-dambuster-aj-z-zebra-revell-172-finished-at-last/page-2

P.S.: I would highlight the interior with a decent drybrushing, although you won't see much of it anyway. Cheers and good luck. Will following this one :pilot:

Strange mixed feelings tonight I am happy because im making good progress , but It suddenly hit me why I am doing this. I was looking at some photos of my little Daisy and although they made me smile , its so devastating knowing she is no longer here to see the model.

Anyway heres some photos so far

Hello.

the Dambuster had two headlights positioned under the fuselage,

many modelers omit this detail,

you found information about these lights that were used to determine the right height,

the water level of the dam,

to release the mine ....

Good job. :yikes:

And that's for the moment.

O forgot the complex bombsight, which was difficult to handle and so failure-prone due to its radiocontrolled glitches. Ha. Don't miss it in its massive appearance http://dambustersblog.com/2008/05/14/the-bombsight-used-to-break-the-mohne-dam/

Wow, what a list of references, thanks bbudde! Sorry to highjack Andrew but I think it's relevant...

All the references seem to confirm that, like the kit, the 'Upkeep' bomb was cylindrical apart from this one? Any background on that?

Also, had the pleasure of attending a talk by Johnny Johnson and he stated that 'T Tommy' was a reserve aircraft and did not have the altitude lamps fitted (so the Airfix kit of Tommy is right). They also had a different bombing technique for the Sorpe - no spinning and a bomb run parallel to the dam.

Thanks, still watching with interest.

hello cedB. I think this was the prototype for dam charges test on the Nant-Y grow tests. Perhaps its the same type as for the mosquito twin highball construction. But not sure 100%. I will look at my Book by Helmuth Euler " Als Deutschlands Dämme brachen." to confirm it a bit more. As you can see in the picture with he german soldiers of a captured mine, that the finally used ones were cylindrical and not half round. Cheers

Correct, the interior was not modified as the Lancasters were straight from the factory with delivery airmiles.

The mine at Duxford is black, I would imagine the casing wouldn't be painted unless to prevent any glare off the basic metal
