DaveJL
Hello all,Here is my next project. A couple of 1/48 Flankers. Thought i'd add them to one thread instead of starting 2.I've always liked the Su-27 family, and much like other aircraft (F/A-18, F-16, F-15) I think it looks better in it's two-seater guise! So here are the 2 I plan to build.First up, Su-27UBM2 of the Kazakhstan Air Force:To look like this:(photo from airliners.net)Aftermarket includes a Neomega cockpit, Quickboost nose cone, Master pitot tube, Aerobonus KAB-500 bombs, Eduard Brassin rocket pods, Quickboost F-14 FOD guards (modified to fit) and decals from an Eduard Su-27UB. I'll also be adding a Hasegawa Litening pod to this jet.I also picked up some AKAN paints:Next up is a Su-30MK2 of the Vietnamese Air Force:To look like this:(net photo)Aftermarket includes Wolfpack Su-30 Cockpit set, Wolfpack Su-30 update set, Quickboost nose cone, Quickboost F-14 FOD covers (modified to fit), Master pitot tube, Begemot decals and Aerobonus CH-25 missiles.I'd also planned to add a Venezuelan Su-30MK2 but can't seem to find 1/48 decals for that nation.Hopefully make a start soon.Dave
Flankerman
This link is to a YouTube video showing latest deliver of four Su-30SM's to Kazakhstan. It also scans along the flightline to show the existing Su-27's and Su-27UB's..... Useful for topside details. Ken
DaveJL
Cheers Ken, that's a great video! The Kazak flankers are great looking jets! The SM's look very smart too in that overall grey paint. Where's that injection moulded 1/48 Flanker with canards? Dave

Flankerman
4 & 5 ??? .... is that all ?? - you need to do some serious Flankering. Part of my 1/72 scale collection - and I've done more since that photo... ... and a few more since then... But I'm not obsessed with Flankers.... honest !!! DaveJL
Nice collection! I just wouldn't have the room for that amount in 1/48! Do plan to do a few more single seaters and would like to do a MKI, MKA and MKM.
The James
I like you're choice of schemes, looking forward to seeing this progress! But I'm not obsessed with Flankers.... honest !!! No, sure you're not...

I'd also planned to add a Venezuelan Su-30MK2 but can't seem to find 1/48 decals for that nation. Dave I have never seen CH-25 / AS-10 Karen missiles on a Flanker... any pictures? for sure export SU-30s can carry he CH-29 TV guided missile. there are Venezuelan marknigs here: http://www.begemotdecals.ru/showpos.php?lang=4&id=50 http://www.begemotdecals.ru/doc/48-008%20Demo%20Flankers%20part%202.pdf maybe they are useful for you! DaveJL
Yes those are the decals I'm talking about! I read in a news article online that Vietnam took delivery of CH-25MAE (or something like that) with the Su-30s.

DaveJL
Thanks mate! Good to see the ECM wingtip pods on them, gives me a bit of a different load out to go with! Will have to start assembling the bits and pieces I need, starting with a kit Dave
DaveJL
Doing a small bit of research for this. Does anyone know if the Vietnamese Su-30MKV's are used primarily for air defence?
DaveJL
Adding a Venezuelan Su-30 to this project! Will update when the parts begin to arrive.
DaveJL
Made a start on the Su-27 today. First up was the Neomega cockpit, which is very nicely detailed: Unlike some other AM cockpits for the -27, you don't have to hack away the plastic for the coamings, simply add the resin parts to the plastic: Once that was dry, i added it to the fuselage, closed everything up and added the Quickboost nose cone: As i'm adding the additional inner wing pylons, I had to pierce holes in the wings that are not marked. These were approx 25mm from the ones already provided for in the kit. I also built up the exhausts, tail fins and horizontal stabilisers: Then built up the ordnance: Going for 4x R-73 (AA-11 Archer), 4x B-8 rocket pods, 2x KAB-500L bombs, 1x Litening pod and 2x R-27 (AA-10 Alamo). Leaves me with one pylon spare so i'm going to get another pair of KAB-500's and add a third on the pylon opposite the Litening pod. The Eduard Brassin rocket pods needed a bit of filler around the joins and the fins of one of the KAB-500's is missing so will have to fix that up with some styrene sheet. More soon. DaveJL
Good bit of work done on this over the last few days. Firstly, i found this picture showing the Su-27 carrying an AS-10 under the fuselage, opposite the Litening pod. I had a set in the stash so decided to add this to the armament: I also had to make up some sort of pylon for the dual B-8 rocket pods for each wing. Eduard provide the pylons for the rockets, but i had to make up a wing attachment. So looking at this image, i used spare pylons and some other bits from the spares: They're not 100%, but i'm happy enough. As all that was going on, I added the tail fins, slats, flaps and pylons to the fuselage, along with tidying up most of the filler. Same problem areas as all Academy Su-27's - slats and intakes. A few more areas to clean up then it's ready for paint. More soon. Dave
Flankerman
Dave, Great progress..... but if that's going to be a Su-27UB (or UBM), then I think it only has two underwing pylons (10 in total) Unless you have photographic evidence for 3 pylons (+ wingtip) per wing ??? Later Su-30's etc have the extra pylons - for a total of 12. Ken
exdraken
WOW! that is an update! cool load out and great progress! would the Flanker be capable of selecting this multitude of weapons during a single flight? ... take care for some clearance between the B-8M pod and the LGB! not much space there! https://defencyclopedia.files.wordpress.com/2015/01/su30mki-full-aa-loaad.jpg great work, looks like an easy build! how is th ejoint btween fuselage and the new nose cone? mine many moons ago was a bit troublesome.... Thanks mate. Take a look at the above pictures for the load-outs! I checked the clearance of the B-8s and LGB's and it's fine! DaveJL
Not much of an update, been fairly busy with work. I'm waiting on some mixing pots arriving so i can experiment with the blue paints, but until then, i've been working on the sub-assembles. The ordnance has been painted fully and is awaiting gloss, decals and weathering. Apart from that I don't have much else to show! Hoping to get the kit primed this evening then i'll start painting. More soon. Dave
