Oh for a railway layout with that much space - and the time to make it!

These Russian photos were taken using the method of three identical b+w photos, but with different filters.

Yes Graham you're right, they are the works of Prokudin Gorskii, there are a few railway related topics among the over 2000 glass slides.

Thanks guys, I could spend a whole evening on viewing them ... so fascinating especially if you consider we know this era only from B/W

Here are some more:

Those could pass for modern photos.

Thanks for sharing

Trevor

Yes, they have high resolution versions with 40 MB each, you can enlarge them almost endlessly before they really become blurred

Whilst it isn't my area of interest, during an aviation visit to Moscow in 2009 we visited the railway museum at Rizhskaya - where I took a load of photos.....

I just spotted this thread - so I thought you might like to see them....

Thank You for the interesting pics.

The one in your photo is this series:

Over 9000 were built some of these also by Austrian Sigl and StEG works, Austria had very similar locos.

The bridge-building is particularly fascinating. The ship that has brought supplies, the large building being put up nearby - the urge to scan left and right is almost irresistible.

I could almost endlessly scan too

There is another view on the same scene albeit in this case the slides were not so well aligned:

If anyone wants to try a better alignment here's the link to the particular frame, it has a button to the individual B/W glass plates ...

Btw for those that might not know, if you right click on the images and select 'View Image' you can enlarge them ...

OK here's another type of machinery:

'Stone-excavating machine of the single scoop type Svirskaia no. 2.'
