WHAT A MONSTER ! Boy hood dream come true :)

Recommended Posts

Just finally got my mits on this its my first 0 gauge loco my favorite Diesel a Class 40 from Heljan. WOW !

It's massive and very satisfying to handle being so huge and heavy hand for comparison.

It's a pretty epic way to get started in 0 even if I only have it for display its good enough for me. I intend to fit sound to it however and wire up the roof fan and lights. So I can have fun running it up and down like I remember them.
I need to choose a number for it and maybe weather her lightly with some loose powder. The only down side is the box which is not well designed meaning there was not enough foam to stop the buffer beam at the other end being smashed in but I have spares and repaired it. Not a problem for me as I used to repair loco models for a living. it's given me chance to get to grips with how these 0 models are put together and that is very well indeed. I could be tempted by a 37 too.
Just thought I'd share my excitement of this with you all. I always wanted a huge class 40 they are gorgeous beasts, HELLFIRE ! In fact :)

When I have the sound in I'll post a video here.

Cheers Rob :)

Speaking of which I think I will have to make a small micro layout / dio to display this and run up and down on.

I will be getting an initial sound chip but I have been writing my own sounds too and have something in mind for this beast :)

I got to get of those!

I have a pretty big garden for that.....

Rick.

best be quick then as they only do short runs and once they are gone that's it it seems, there is a green one out too :)

Congratulations, mate!

0 scale is a bit too big for me. I'll stay with H0 scale.

Both my daughters got new trains last week.

Both were Electric locomotive and Norwegian ICE train.

Lovely Rob...just had a look on their site and saw the Class 52's had all sold out quickly..not surprising, a beautiful loco...when you said you had your mitts on one you weren't joking !

Yep Heljan annoyingly only do short runs in the 0 it seems. They sold out of 37s which is a sod as I would love one. With them being such popular locos I am surprised the have not done a reissue as I would be certain they would sell out again. You can't have enough 37s 40s 20s, Their Deltic is a monster too and its much heftier than this even though not as long. I don't own one (sadly) but I have been lucky to work on one for a chap who wanted a sound project fitting to it.

It was so powerful it ripped the track up underneath itself. This will likely be the same as they have 2 motors one on each bogie. Probably a little excessive but I am not complaining.

I need to work out which number to do.

Congratulations, mate!

Hi mate long time no speak hope your well. Yep 0 is a little big but cool for it. You cant have much unless you have space but Its such a delight to even have a wagon at the scale. I once went to a chap who had a shed bigger than my house with his 0 layout on and It was like a dream come true, Complex loops of Track all around you going over the top of each other, Big building and locos wagons and carriages everywhere with a central yard and control point. Absolutely wonderful. The only think it missed was a 1/32 Vulcan flying over ( I think 0 is 1/32 scale or there abouts)

They sounded wonderful

Like my old Car !

Lovely - good luck with the sound - the 40's had a unique sound with their turbos whistling even at idle..:whistle::whistle:

Many, many happy memories of them on the North Wales Coast and at Mollington Street Shed - often replacing a reviled, failed Duff...

Yep they sound wonderful and each a little different. I love it when you get one that has a ghostly whistle on the start up.

I started a sound project a while ago and it's good but needs work.

That's in an 00 loco.

I must get hold of a lokprogrammer again soon.

Cheers Rob :)

That's a bit of a monster!

If that ever derails I'd watch your toes!

Think I'll stick with N.

Karl

O is closer to 1/48th

O Gauge is around 1:43 - 1:48 indeed - Gauge 1 - is around the 1:32 mark

'O' is often known as 7mm to the foot too.

Radleigh I had no idea you liked Railway stuff too. I'll have to bring it for you to see sometime.

As for scale 1/48 pilot is half the size of an 0 gauge person. Pretty sure it scales better with 1:32 if I'm honest. Same as 00 and 1.72 translate well which are half the size of 0 (half 0/ 00) HO is different again being 3mm scaleand 00 is 4mm scale locos on ho track.

I don't think there is a railway scale that translates to 48th scale but n gauge gets close to 1/144

Cheers Rob :)
