Tamiya's 1/12 Lola T70 - wrong livery?

Both the original issue of this kit, and the enhanced re-issue have decals for the 1967 Nurburgring 1000km, the Surtees/Hobbs car which qualified second. I'm starting to look into this because I have a poorly built one in the loft that came from a jumble sale many years ago and was 'completed' by my 12 year old self (it's still missing the spare front tyre). I am looking into dismantling it and building it properly in due course once I get hold of some replacement instructions.

However, the kit has the Chevrolet engine and the car at the '67 'Ring 1000km was Aston Martin engined - hadn't noticed before, is this indeed the case and has this been known all along?

There are a few aftermarket options I can explore though.

Thanks Roy and Codger It's such a lovely looking car, it could have been such a success if it had had a competitive engine at the top level.

I'm erring to a rebuild as one of Denny Hulme's Sid Taylor cars or maybe a Surtees car from later in '67 when they did run Chevy small blocks.

Tamiya's car seems to be a bit of a bitza, no doubt they took the details from an example somewhere several years after the fact so various mods and changes were incorporated or deleted. The colour scheme for The Ring in '67 is in fact simplified as the white arrows had a rather smart thin red border it seems.

I'll keep gathering data and bits and pieces because this is going to be a big job!

Many thanks for the link Malc, some interesting stuff but completely out of my league pricewise - that sort of money is hard to justify to spend on oneself alone.

I'm a bit confused by the designation of the full transkit though. It looks fine for the Lola Aston at Le Mans '67, but the Nurburgring 24 Hours in '67 wasn't for Group 4 & 6 cars, there were no Lola T70s there.

..can, yes. But at several times the cost of the kit, is anyone really going to bite?.

Yes, its very nice, but too expensive for me also...... :weep:

Right! The engine conversion is for the 6 hours 1000KM at Nurburgring with a standard rear body.

Who are these uber-rich car modellers? A conversion set for a £100+ kit that costs a month and half's gas and electricity...

Without being too much of a pedant, it doesn't look right for the 1000km either though, the sole entry there had the 'standard' bodywork http://www.gettyimages.co.uk/detail/news-photo/the-lola-cars-team-surtees-lola-t70-mk-3-gt-aston-martin-news-photo/469437681 although you could make that with the Aston engine and some of the decals.

I am no T70 expert, but I believe the descriptions on Bestbalsa website are not entirely right, the rear body for No. 11 was unique for '67 LM, No. 12 had the normal rear body. As you rightly say, the only T70 entry for the '67 1000km DE race was with the 'standard' rear cover.

Google is your friend! ;)

Hi Vee,

John Surtees and David Hobbs drove the T70 with a Chevrolet engine in the BOAC 500 in 1967. It was bright red, had a blue speedbird logo in front of the cockpit and carried the race no. 2. It also had dive planes each side of the nose. Easy conversion and of course the white arrow marking didn't need a red border!

I built this kit when I was a kid too and did it in this colour scheme as I realised that earlier versions didn't have the Chevy motor.

Just a thought.

Dave

Many thanks Dave. I think that that one will be the one to do, certainly that race, it looks very smart in red.

There are decals available for it from BBK (although they don't look to complex to make from spares/scratch). They also do the 1968 Oulton Park TT winner, which was also in the frame.
