Revell Boeing B17-F Memphis Belle 1/48

Recommended Posts

Hello all

My latest offering - this is Revell's 1/48 Flying Fortress in 1/48. This is its Memphis Belle boxing of a kit dating back to the 70s, there were some fit issues and filling required. It might be stating the obvious but this kit is BIG - way too big for my display shelf, so it has had to find refuge in the garage.

She was built straight from the box with no aftermarket additions, airbrushed with Revell Aqua Acrylics, then weathered with a Flory dark dirt panel line wash, some oils and pastels and a heavily diluted Tamiya acrylic mix for some exhaust stains.

As well as the kit's own issues, my own shortcomings meant that I used superglue to attach the nose, forgetting that I hadn't dipped it in Klear first, hence some fogging :banghead:although I don't think that's noticeable in these pics. All in all an enjoyable build.

Thanks for looking, any comments welcome

Cheers

Adam

That looks great, my friend. I really like the subtle use of the dark green.

I remember having one of these kits when I was about 14... at the time it was my most treasured possession (didn't stop me from flogging it to a school-friend a year after I acquired it, though!)

Thanks very much for sharing.

Chris.

PS: By the way, the two bombs on external racks... did the '17 ever carry those or is it a bit of a "What If"....? If they did, then please pardon my ignorance.

Absolutely beautiful work, excellent stuff. I have this in the stash (as well as the Monogram B-17G) and all the kit's "issues" have so far put me off. Seeing your outstanding build is quite an inspiration, I have no excuse not to get cracking on my own. Thanks for posting!

Thanks Chris. I wasn't sure about the external bomb racks, but these were the only ordnance that came with the kit, and there were no options for open bomb bay doors, so I just went with what was in the box.

Thanks gents. Anorak73 - know what you mean, this one took me the best part of a year from start to finish. Only the sheer size of the thing and the amount of space it took up on the shelf of doom kept reminding me it needed finishing!

This is one of my kits sitting on the shelf of doom. i guess i wasn't prepared for how big it is, and the mammoth job of rescribing, but you've done an amazing job. I'm wondering of i should bother with the rescribing?

Beautiful job on this real monster of a kit. Did this one years back and its way to big for my display too, It was so often damaged, that i stopped replacing the gun barrels of the tail gunner station and the weak tail wheel.

:goodjob:

Thanks again, gents.

DAG058 - it was ok to build, although the detail on it is fairly basic, the guns in particular lack any interesting detail. Fuselage halves went together ok, but quite a bit of filler needed around the wing roots, but nothing too arduous. Not as nice as the 1/72 one that rickpadwick referred to, which is a much newer tooled kit.

Stig - I'm no fan of raised panel lines, but the scale of the task on a kit this size meant I had no intention of going down that road. Life's too short for things like that!

What a great build. The fact you used no extras is even more impressive. The subtle camouflage is outstanding. You've also made a great job of the decals, no easy task over the detail. Very well done.
