Tamiya Brabham BT44b 1/12 scale

Recommended Posts

Hi,
just started the next wip with this car.

Its the Brabham BT44b from Tamiya.I found some after market parts in my stash and will see if i can use it or not.
The missing Goodyear decals are also here.
So the only thing i would need are some pics from the car.Original shots would be perfect, but restored ones are also welcome.

I will start in a few days.

Thanks for watching!Nice build from you!
Today here are the first shots of the engine.I started with the engine instead of the Tamiya plans who says to start with the chassis first.

I glued the parts together and tried to simulate the casting of the engine block.
I used Tamiya Structur color for this effect.

After the color was dry i sprayed the first coat of color on it.
Now it needs some detail coloring and than i will apply the pe parts.

The first pe parts are installed.

but i dont know where to put these ones here?

Thundervalley says these are "Bracket for holding Exhaust Collector to header Pipes"

I am not so good in english language, but i think i got something to do with the exhaust and the engine block mounting,or?

Hello Christian,

I think those brackets go here:

The picture is from a Lotus 72, but I think the exhaust collectors were similar.

Great work on the Brabham, I look forward to seeing more.

Hi,
next step was the cam covers.

3163343462303334.jpg

Just test the fitting of the intake trumpets.
looks good.

Here i got another question for the cracks.

3261346130626665.jpg

Did the Brabham 44b got these small springs on the small bracket or not?

thats all for today.
Thanks and regards Christian

I think all the DFV engines had those springs, as far as i know they are the throttle slider return springs. Some DFV's had covers for the ends of the sliders to try and stop the throttle jamming.

Stuart

Gordan Murrays Brabhams were all great looking cars, this has to be one of the best though.

Great start, I like what you've done with that texture paint. DFV's usually (always?) had the ends of the cylinder heads painted black btw, rather than the silver/black border being along the join for the cam cover, some good pictures here:

Hi,today i changed the E-Jan springs with the ones from Top Studio.

3561366631363364.jpg

Here are the E-Jan springs who are much too long.I already cut 3mm off and they are even too long.I glued them under the holding bracket.
Not a good solution.

So i decided to use springs from Top Studio for mufflers.
These are perfect and now its better.

These springs was used.

Now i will go on with some smaller engine parts and than i will glue the gearbox in place.
And the engine block will get some black on the sides!

Thanks!

Gearbox and engine are now together.

I felt that the gearbox are still too shiny.I used a flat clear coat after i colored it.But its still shiny.
But on the other side when all the parts around are on the right place it would be ok.

A very helpful book for all that cable work is this here:

http://members.shaw.ca/millersbrm/publications2.html
#5 "Plumbing and Wiring Strategies for the DFV", (Colour ), Published 2011 ---- $36.00 U.S.

When you are planing to build some of the cosworth engine's,this is your standard book.Everything is written and every small piece of the engine is explained.
Perfect for modeling!

i decided to kick Carlos out of the car and put Carlos into it. :banghead: :banghead:
Carlos Reutemann is out and Carlos Pace is in. :goodjob:
The decals are great to work with. The hole build is pure fun,no comparison to my resin builds before.

Thanks Simon!

First parts are clearcoated with Zero Paint 2k clearcoat.Works fine.
But i am thinking about to use a semi-gloss clearcoat the next time. The gloss coat is so shiny, maybe too much shine?
What do you guys mean?
Too shiny for a race car?

I made a mistake when i colored the alu part behind the driver. The tape pulled of a bigger part from the martini stripes and from the start number.I tryed to repair it,but now i got a small bubble under the white start number.
I will show a pic from that mistake the next time. :? :?

Hello,
proof of life from my Brabham.

Here you can see the mistake with the decals. But now its ok.

3365663838613661.jpg

In the meantime i made the front brake stuff and some suspension parts.

3465336138383632.jpg

Some work to do before i can put the chassis together.

regards Christian

With the next model i will give the Zero Paint semi-gloss clearcoat a try.
