Bandai 48th scale AT-ST (alt camo scheme)

Recommended Posts

First layer of chipping going on.......................

Both sponge technique and brush used.

Now is the time to be patient. I can't rush ahead at this point. Trying to be as logical as possible about the location of the chipping and scratches. I'm thinking in terms of this AT-ST scraping against rocks as it makes its way through various wadis. Thinking about sand and shrapnel marks, falling rocks, general wear and tear.

Next will be the black-brown chips and scratches.

Cheers

Richard.

Slowly, slowly..................

20150507_195320.jpg

In the mean time I was thinking about stowage. Any vehicle wether real or imagined will have a crew living in/on it during time of conflict. So, they will need rations, a toilet of some sort, packs for personal effects and tarps etc for when it rains or is very hot. So after having a quick look around at what is available in 48th scale I decided on this set................

Not everything in the set is usable in this case, but a lot of it is.

I'm going to make some stowage bins for the back of the head to hold the jerry cans, ammo boxes and bed rolls, plus some more bed roll/tarps on top. Something like this?

Now, back to the chipping, and thinking about weapons fits...............................

Managed to make a little more progress. It's all so painstakingly slow, but I believe worth it.

The main dirty brown grey wash was achieved with Vallejo model wash. After that had dried I applied various enamel based streaking grimes and washes in very specific small controlled locations being very mindful not to let any of the enamel based applications, and odourless white spirit thinner, seep deeper into the kit parts. So far, so good. I've had no problems with the plastic being effected in any way.

Just prior to these photos being taken I had airbrushed some Vallejo semi gloss varnish all over it to seal the weathering in and protect what I'd put on so far from the additional weathering yet to come. I hate it when you have a particular 'streak' that looks so effective and good, and then lose it after applying another effect over the top of it. So I sealed it to stop that from happening.

Cheers

Richard.

Looking great Richard. The Vallejo wash has given it a really nice used look and blended the chipping in with the rest of the finish.

You're a brave man going in with the enamel and white spirit!

Thanks Andy. Yeah I'm being very careful where I put the enamel stuff. Trying to avoid any places where it might have a chance of getting to the unprotected plastic. I think I'll play it safe with the desert sand/dust and go with acrylics as I don't want the issues you had with the feet.

Nice to know someone else from sunny old Adelaide is on here :goodjob::banghead::poo:

I am also doing this kit at the moment, its fantastic.

Sunny! LOL I wish! That is the main reason nothing has progressed in months. I simply cannot be creative in these stupid European type cold temperatures! Bring back 40°C please!

Any progress on this one?

No sorry. The Tamiya 48th scale F-14A Tomcat has my undivided attention atm. But I really want to get back to this too. I want to get it finished before the Bandai AT-AT comes out!

I've decided to get back to the AT-ST! :wicked:

One of the pressing issues I needed to address was the fit of the turret roof.

I found cutting off the areas marked in pink helped a lot.

I also began work on some stowage racks on the back of the turret.

Here's the sort of load out that I'm aiming for.

A bit of filling needed here!

Good to see this one back on the rack.

And it still looks very impressive.

I have something along similar lines

planned for the future so I'll be back to

this at a later date to ruthlessly steal

your ideas. ^_^
