AS90 - from a complete tank novice-paint on

Recommended Posts

The fact that I said tank when referring to the AS90 is an indicator I suppose of what little I know on these subjects. In my 35 years (give or take) of modelling, I have only built one fighting vehicle, that being the Humbrol/Heller 1/76th Sherman.

So, please, will have to take me by the hand, and explain any nomenclature I use that is erroneous, be it a cannon when it is a gun, a 'thingymajig' for a glacis, or a 'I dunno' for zimmermitt.

What I do hope is that I can show how my aircraft modelling skills transfer over to track thingies, or AFVs as I am led to believe they are called. Why an AS90? Well, I have a thing for post war British armour, which must stem form the time I crawled over a Scimitar (or was it a Fox?). One of my closet mates is in the Royal Artillery (he is about to retire) and has served on AS90s as well as MLRS, and this was on sale from Panzer Vor! So I took it.

Here I have started by adding weld marks along the hull, using milliput

DSCF0002_zpsalbdtvw4.jpg

This exhaust(?) had a sink mark, so was filled

DSCF0005_zps22oip5mu.jpg

I have noticed from various pictures on the net that the AS90 very rarely carried any tools on its hull, so all the locating pins were filled in. You can see that I am making use of the Eduard set.

The rear view mirrors has more accurate stems and mountings made from brass rod

DSCF0004_zps2hdtowhf.jpg

The moulded brake/rear lights and indicators were removed, and replaced with a 5 thou piece of plasticard mounted on top of a smaller but

thicker piece. 1.5mm MV lenses will be used to replicate these lights.

Finally, I have replaced the gun carriage with more plasticard as the original is moulded as a solid piece, which is not so in real life.

Well, so far you have been kind. Thank you. And so on to part 2....

I have altered the front lights in the same manner

DSCF0014_zpsdboiw6hj.jpg

Using scrap PE propeller bosses, I have added what I think is the horn. Wire has been used to represent the headlight and horn electrical leads

DSCF0010_zpsrjy6effi.jpg

Tool strap loops have been added all around the bodyDSCF0015_zpsxwiyv9mi.jpg

More scrap PE was used to add a grill to this vent. After this pic was taken I decided that the vent sat too high and did not have an acute enough 90 degree bend. I scrapped this and made my own.

Fantastic start to what is going to be a great Finished SPG.

I'm about to start the very same kit for a mate who was in the same regiment as me "3rd Royal Horse Artillery" who was driving and maintenance instructor on them. I too have bought the Eduard upgrades for the mesh and the body parts as well as the Better Barrel.

Hope mine goes as well as yours, keep up the good work.

Thank you

I have now moved onto the painting stage. Over a coat of black, I sprayed the green, keeping the airbrush approximately perpendicular to the upper surfaces to create shadows.

Pinwash going on

The kit supplied tracks had these holes on the inside faces. They do not exist on the real thing so they were filled

I decided to make my own amber flashing beacon by heat plunging some shaped plastic rod into some clear sheeting. As you can see in the background the black camo has been added

Lights added, decals applied, and AK rain marks for NATO tanks added

Looking good. You don't seem to see many of these being built, so it's good to see. :) I notice you didn't go for the Accurate Armour update kit, and it doesn't seem to have affected the build. Makes you wonder whether that's really necessary as long as you get a new barrel with the sagged "concertina" cover. :hmmm:

That looks great, where did you get your lenses from?

Little-cars.com, otherwise known as Modelling-tools.com. They have a page in the vendor section on BM

I am very new to armour modelling and not fully aware of what is out there. Although aware of Accurate Armour I did not know of the set until I started. I did subsequently look at it but I find their website lets them down a bit as they do not go into sufficient detail of what is included, and the photos of their products to not do them justice. Ideally I would like to be able to click on the photo of the product to expand it, but that does not happed. Basically their photos are too small.

Having said that, unless I wanted to do the interior, I felt the Eduard set, a metal barrel (that comes with the saggy bellow thing) and my own scratch building skills would be sufficient. Having researched the web and looked at various walkarounds, I think the kit as got nearly everything spot on.

I will use AA products in the future (I have just received the tow ropes and fire extinguishers for this build) but I do not think I will be buying any of the bigger stuff. Too expensive, and I will not be building that much armour. Sorry, but flying things are my first love!

Thanks David. It's not too late. Some photos there will be very useful, especially the one of the bellows showing what I thought was a seam, but is in actual fact a series of holes.

This might be of interest. It has the right amount of sag in the barrel recoil cover.

There is a review, some years ago, over on Armorama.

Already got that. I go it and the AS90 from Panzer Vor!. However there were some bits missing from the RB barrel, so Panzer kindly contributed £5 towards a replacement set

Hello all.

Hope you are all enjoying the festivities! Bet you thought I had forgotten about this, hadn't you? Nah! Finished it months ago but have not got round to loading up some pictures.

Home made winky pot with rotating reflector inside

DSCF0002_zpsveqm8r76.jpg

retaining wire for stowagwe box clips added

DSCF0004_zpszgxsvhnv.jpg

Hydraulic actuator fro the gun carriage. Note I have also added the strop that goes around the barrel

DSCF0008_zpsctgz37kl.jpg

Electrical lead added to smoke dischargers

DSCF0011_zpsijrgxcxm.jpg

Handles added to this hatch were made of fuse wire. The triangular plate in front of the hatch was missing a hole, which I have now drilled out

DSCF0006_zpsn8r6tubm.jpg

Finally, smoke coloured sewing thread has been wrapped around this reel.
