tonyot
I remember speaking to an American sailor in Pompey during the 1980`s about the Super Carriers and he said that they were so big that there were `Ghetto`s' onboard (black and hispanic) which were no go areas for white sailors and that there were even unsolved murders onboard plus a list of missing person`s! I don`t know how true this was or whether he was winding us up but he did seem very plausible! I also saw a couple of white US sailors who dressed and spoke like black gang members or rap singers with all the bling and stuff,.....which seemed very strange at the time,......"u no what I meen man"! Cheers Tony PS- I Meant to say that these carriers are awesome to look at and if anybody is nearby you must go and look at it! It probably has more fast jets on board than the entire RAF! Paul J
As I have mentioned before, I was lucky enough to get on board CV67 JFK in 1976. Loads of types on board. In comparison it looks like its mainly all variations of Hornets- a true MRCA! Whereas on JFK back then I recall, A-7,F-14, 3x RF-8, E-2C, A-6E, EA-6A, S-3A, SH-3. Looking at the pics of CV-71 its all manner of F-18 versions , E-2 and a few UH-60. How times and needs have changed!
tomprobert
F/A-18s rule the roost these days... I managed to get on-board USS Constellation in Freemantle, Perth, in 2001 and only recently found a box full of 'old school' pictures of F-14s, S-3s, E/A-6s, legacy F/A-18s, Hawkeyes and a Greyhound or two. How things have changed in a relatively short space of time. Connie is gone along with a good deal of her 'flock' Tom
