Z Nose Halifax- Revell Mk.V & Freightdog Resin update parts-FINISHED

Recommended Posts

Hiya Folks,

This one has been on the backburner since Colin at Freightdog brought out his Z Nose Tollerton Fairing because one of the aircraft that I wanted to recreate appeared to have a raised 4 gun mid upper turret and when I bought the Z Nose Colin told me that a part for the raised mid upper fairing was in the pipeline. Well now this part has been released so I`m starting my next Halibag at last!

Here is a pic of the Tollerton Fairing for the nose and the raised mid upper gun fairiing in place on the fuselage;

Here are the after market parts which I`ve acquired, as you can see I`ve been over some of the parts with a coat of spray can black to serve as an undercoat and the resin rear wheel well cover is already in place in the fuselage to the left ;

These are the afor mentioned Freightdog Tollerton Z Nose fairing and raised mid upper gun turret fairing plus their update set for the props, engine radiators and intakes, wheels, tail wheel etc plus some Quick Boost resin exhausts and an Eduard set which I might not use yet.

This is the subject that I want to recreate- London`s Revenge `Lana Turner' with the huge MGM Lion from 427 Sqn RCAF;

I`ve only found photos of the nose area so far however this period cartoon makes me believe that it was fitted with the raised mid upper gun fairing;

Here is the decal sheet that I`m using, something that every Halifax fan should have stashed away;

Wish me luck!

Cheers

Hiya Fella`s,.....gulp,.....no pressure then! I`m on a diet at the moment so don`t let me smell your popcorn if you are munching any!

Ooops,.....sorry Colin, I thought that the raised turret part had already been released!

Well,....not much of an update yet I`m afraid,......after going over most of the parts with a dusting of matt black spray can to serve as an undercoat, the painters have been in and decorated the flightdeck using Humbrol enamel 78 Cockpit Green;

The engine nacelles have been joined together and the inboard nacelle`s are having the plastic air intake on top of the part removed to be replaced by the Freightdog resin part. The nearest part has had the intake removed and the furthest has not yet, The smaller resin parts are the Freightdog side air intakes and the resin Galley type radiator inserts can also be seen too;

Here are the inner and outer engine nacelles with their Freightdog radiators ready to be fitted;

Another part to be constructed was the tailplane with its early style `V' shaped fin plates;

I told you that there wasn`t much of an update, hopefully the next one will be more interesting,

Cheers

Hiya Folks,

Here is my latest update;

The cockpit now looks a bit better now that the painters have left! On the real Halifax there were small windows within the holes in the bulkhead behind the pilots seat so these were glazed using Krystal Klear;

10_zpsuzet8p4x.jpg

After the cockpit was finished the fuselage halves were joined and the Freightdog resin Z Nose Tollerton fairing was test fitted. As the real fairing was fitted over the previous nose gun position the original bomb aimers glazing was still retained and the upper part of this glazing was covered by the Tollerton fairing, though it can still be seen through the front window. To replicate this feature of the real aircraft the Revell nose glazing was trimmed and sanded to make it narrower and then inserted inside the clear resin fairing,.....I hope that I`ve made sense,....but a picture paints a thousand words and so these photos may help;

12a_zpsh1df5t4v.jpg

As the kit does not include the internal framework underneath the glazing above the Air Engineers position which is behind the cockpit this was added using plastic rod. This area did not have a seat so the kit item was removed at an earlier stage;

And the new Freightdog resin raised mid upper gun turret fairing was also added at this point too;

14_zpsvn2ephre.jpg

Leaving the fuselage, the wings were now constructed taking care to add the wheel well interior to the lower wing halves before the wings are joined together. To these were added the previously made engine nacelles and these were sanded to remove the seam lines. There are very prominent seams within the recess which can be found behind every radiator and so the new Freightdog resin radiator units were left off for now as this makes it easier to fill and sand flat thesurface inside;

15_zpsxahpungj.jpg

Once the insides were filled and sanded the nacelles received a thin coat of paint along the seams to check their integrity;

After this was done the Freightdog resin Gallay radiator units were super glued into place along with the air intakes above the inner engines and the propellers were test fitted;

18_zpsm1uwg1w0.jpg

The wings now needed to be sanded to remove the seam lines and the nacelles would also be sanded to try to make them look a little slimmer and less bulbous. To make painting of the night bomber scheme easier the wings would be left off until painting was complete and the fact that they can be easily slid onto the wing spars projecting from the fuselage makes this much easier. For the same reason the fin and rudder endplates would also be left off until after painting too as they literally click into position;

That is all for now but it is beginning to look like a Halifax now,

Cheers

Cheers fella`s

Yes Cees I did glaze all three openings as I thought that was the case, no problem though, I can easily remove the glazing from the middle one.

I saw the glazing some time ago on a colour film depicting Canadian flown Halibag`s which included some cockpit shots and from memory assumed that they were all glazed!

Tony, your work is as always a huge inspiration to me and spurs me to build new kits.

Also, I was wondering...you've used the Aeroclub engines before as well, right? How do they fit over the gear bay openings?

Hiya Procopius,

Thanks for your kind words, it is thanks to people like yourself making nice comments that keep me motivated.

I have assembled and test fitted the Aeroclub engine nacelles to a Revell wing and I don`t recall any problems, but I have not made a Halifax model using these engines yet,....I`m saving them for two particular aircraft,...an Airborne Forces Mk.V and a 10 Sqn Mk.II.

All the best,

Tony

Just did a bit of sanding today but not much to photograph. Spent most of the day looking for a missing resin propeller which the carpet monster has claimed,....which is odd as we don`t have any carpets here anymore, yet the monster (gremlin) has remained. Still looking but hopefully all will be well!

Should be getting some paint on soon, probably using a rattle can coating of Tamiya black with hand brushed upper surface camo.

Cheers

Maybe you've got a linoleum lizard.

No it is definitely a laminate floor monster,.....we don`t have linoleum anymore! We occasionally see a huge spider which lives in the cellar and we think that might be the `monster'. I`ve killed it four times and it keeps coming back with its big hairy legs and tattoo`s!!!
