RT-2PM "Topol" / SS-25 "Sickle" [Zvezda 1/72]

Recommended Posts

Hi,

img_0076.jpg

The RT-2PM Topol, NATO reporting name SS-25 Sickle is a mobile intercontinental ballistic missile. This very unique vehicle has been designed in the Soviet Union at the end of 70’s. And it entered in service in the middle of 80’s. Throughout this time work continued on improving the battle management system. And Topol is still in service with Russia's Strategic Missile Troops.

It a very good kit from Zvezda. With a lot of details (309 parts), the kit is easy to build and very well engineered. It’s a pleasure to just cut an glue together all the parts and everything fit well. The molding is perfect as well. Two options are present with all the parts for it : for transport and for launching. The instructions are long and divided in 18 steps. Be careful to follow it.

Building this kit was very fun. I generally build planes and it was my first really military kit, even if it is a ground to air attack system (ground-to-ground…). I should have done better build in particular some joints, and in particular the long missile joint which it is the maybe worst point of this kit.

I had fun to paint and to weather this kit. I wanted to test some new techniques of weathering. Military kits offer better options and some new techniques of weathering. It was pleasant to use Mig Ammo products and their tutorials on Youtube.

Painting was a pleasant moment for me. And weathering too. You can see all the building there (only in french).

I hope you will like the final result. I will do some more ground-to-air military kit. But not immediately. For now, I will come back to my planes and UAV !

First one I have seen built Alain and what a great build it is, great finishing, this has pushed me towards picking one of these up, excellent.

Great model Alain - nice build and subtle 'weathering'.

One thing to note though - the end cap of the missile tube is 'blown off' as it is raised - exposing the missile head.

Zvezda have been very naughty in depicting the missile in the raised position in the background on their box art - you cannot strictly do it that way without some extra work.

I have built two of these - one in the transport position, the other with the missile tube raised for firing - with a scratch-built missile head inside...

More photos and the build here.

Mine aren't as well painted as yours :worthy:

Thanks for all your comments

Ken, I had already noticed this point about the cap when it is raised. I had seen your build. It was a reference for me. But, I'm not as talented as you are. And I don't have your skills. And I'm to lazy to do this modification. Thanks for your comment.

Being a mainly aircraft builder these days I picked one of these up Sunday for £20. Must say I am impressed with the kit. Looks great in the box and glad to read comments about the fit etc.

For some reason I have an urge to build this straight away. One question I have is where can I get the right colour green for this (acrylic pls)

Great work! This is indeed a lovely kit and you did really good job with it!

I thinkj, I'll add another Topol to this topic with my version of this kit:
