beetcleaner
Can anyone advise which Humbrol enamel is the closest match to a Merlin engine?. I only use enamels as I am familiar with them from the past. I'm building the Airfix 1/24 Hurricane and the instructions say Humbroll 33 Matt Black which I think would be too flat even if drybrushed with silver. is it better to use Humbrol 85 Satin Black minus the drybrushing or even Humbrol 53 Gun Metal (which I think would be too silver(ish) Any opinions would be very helpful. rmcclure
Definitely satin black, in my opinion. As far as I'm aware and from what I've seen in museums, Merlins were almost completely black. It's personal choice but I've always used a very slight silver drybrushing to highlight a little detail otherwise it's just a bit too uniform. You're right - gunmetal would be far too silvery for an overall finish. Might be a good alternative to silver for a drybrush though. Cheers, Roger
