Sunday Telegraph 22 February

Today's paper has an article about the Royal Mint's 50p piece commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.

The paper comments that the coin comes in a wallet and the Mint has managed to illustrate the Battle on it with a picture of Mk IX Spitfires. The S. Telegraph spotted that the nearest is coded JEoJ and has the green maple leaf ensignia.

The paper posted another picture of a Spitire in 'BoB colours' to show what it thinks should have been on the wallet. So well and good but this picture shows a Spitfire resplendant with Sky Spinner and rear fuselage band!

The Mint meant well, I suppose. It's nice that someone, somewhere (the Royal Mint in this case) has remembered the Battle but if they go to the trouble of illustrating it one would expect them to have a half-way accurate picture on the wallet. Equally, the Sunday Telegraph might have taken the trouble to post a picture of a real BoB vintage Spitfire. And perhaps comment that the Hurricane was ignored altogether by the Mint.
