1/48 aoshima airwolf

Recommended Posts

Right chaps, here's my first entry to my first ever group build.

May I present the aoshima version of the fabulous airwolf.

To my knowledge, the best kit available of the iconic lady.

Sprue shots to follow..........

Thanks for the comments chaps.
Looking forward to getting going on this, as I have had it hanging around for a bit. I keep taking it out, fondling the sprues, then putting it back.
Not exactly sure what colour I am going to use. The original colour was a DuPont colour called phantom grey metallic. I have tried to track down the paint, but have been put off by some web sites that say it doesn't scale down very well, and just doesn't look right.
Have been recommended to try revel No. 9 matt anthracite grey, so will be conducting some tests.
We'll have to see how it looks, plasmahal, after I've had my hands on it.
Here's the sprue shots, there's quite a few.....

A nice sprue of plated parts.

CAM00539.jpg

The transparencies ate, nicely transparent.

CAM00542.jpg

Strange, this, a complete clear fuselage. Don't quite know what to do with this.

CAM00544.jpg

Fairly basic decal sheet, mind you, there were no external markings on the lady. Blemish free.

CAM00540.jpg

There is some really fine surface detail on the fuselage.

CAM00543.jpg

These are even carried through onto the clear fuselage.

Sorry about the poor quality of the pics, it's hard to get good lighting for my camera phone.

Hope this is enough to whet your appetites.

Later.

Matt.

Thanks dazdot. Went and fetched some, will try it and see. The instructions reccomend a mixture of 80% black to 20% blue. Might give this a whirl too.

Started work today and get some progress has been made. The main rotor blades have been assembled, and most of the rotor gear too.

Just waiting for paint to dry on some cockpit sections, then pics to follow.

Good start.

That see through fuselage above, did not Airwolf go invisible at some time so that would the idea behind that bit adding to the kit?

well i've been slowly watching the Airwolf DVD's over the last six months and after reaching a point halfway through series three i have not seen Airwolf go invisible yet... and i hope i don't !!!

as with most of these shows, the memory is better than reality, but Airwolf is a great looking Aircraft. my personal favorite is Street Hawk.

watching this one (and most of the Si-Fi group build) closely :coolio:

Cheers for looking chaps.

I'm honoured anyone wants to follow my humble build.

I think the clear fuselage might be so you can leave a side panel off the rear cockpit section to see dom in the back with all the electronic dooberies, as once it's closed up all the detail is lost forever.

Cockpit nearing completion, didn't take too many progress pics, as to be honest I got engrossed in the work and forgot.

wow, i knew JMV had had a hard time of it lately, last time i looked into it it was reported that he was expected to die. i guess the amputation was his only chance.

he certainly don't look like he used to

as a side note... my daughters middle name is Caitlin... and yes, it is Airwolf's fault !!!

G'day <att,

I was an aviation TV tragic as a kid and this was definitely one of my faves, although I don't think it really effected me :banghead:

I would love to get my hands on this kit someday so following your build with interest  Ref the clear fuselage parts. Are the cabin windows included as part of the fuselage mould? If yes, perhaps it offers the builder the option of not having to fit windows, just masking them?

cheers,

Pappy

Just checked pappy, and the clear fuselage isn't glazed.

It makes no mention of it in the instructions, and all the build stages clearly state where there are optional parts.

I suppose, if you were clever enough, you could scratch build a new rotor head and rotor, the horizontal stabiliser for the tail, the tail itself and the weapons, paint the windows black ( to hide the lack of cockpit) and you could have 2 airwolfs! Or an airwolf and a redwolf!

Righty ho, time for an update.

Not had any time to work on her this week, until today, so decided to dry fit her.

I was worried about closing her up, as the location points on the fuselage are rather small, needn't have worried, when I fitted the cockpit and rotor mechanism it all lined up beautifully.

Aoshima have really gone to town with the detail on the rear weapons station and all the computer gubbins, shame really, as bugger all is visible.....

They have provided some nice decals for the computer banks, even gone to the trouble of making them match the moulded details, question is do I bother trying to use them giving the severe lack of any visibility?

While I mull this over I have started my least favourite part of the build,so far, trying to paint stringfellow and Dominic.

Aoshima have been very kind to Dominic, as he is nice and trim looking ( not as chunky as in real life). Just waiting for the paint to dry, then they can be fitted.

If anyone has any views on the decals, then let me know.

Will leave you with some dry fit pics, starting to look like airwolf now.

Thanks Tom.

More progress has been made today.

Both figures are finished, started the decals on the computers, and started fitting the cockpit glazing.

Soon be ready to button her up.

Then just got the worry of the paint job, hope I can do it justice.

Will get some more pics up soon.

Thanks for looking in.

Matt.

Hi chaps.

As promised a few more progress pics...

Decided to apply the decals to the instrument panels.

DSC_0062.jpg

DSC_0063.jpg

Didn't turn out too bad, considering this is my first real attempt at decals.

They look better in real life than in the photos, not so wrinkled.
