Dermo245
Inspired by Rick's excellent 1/48 scale Jayhawk here on the forum, I'm also building one albeit in 1/72 scale for a 'TV & Movies' group build. This is the Hobby Boss kit.. What you get in the box.. And while you get seats for the cabin, you don't get much else in the way of rescue kit. So scratchbuilt most of that from odds and ends in the spares box. From left to right in the back, a marker buoy thing, some bags, a radio rack, radios and fire extinguisher (kit seats in the front obviously!) Cabin floor masked up for the anti-slip strips...before.. And after.. Thanks for looking. Dermot Edited April 8, 2015 by Dermo245
stevej60
Great stuff Dermot, this will look a stunner in that scheme,I think these Hobbyboss helicopter kits are way underated,I built the Black Cats Lynx last year and loved it, by chance I just got their CH46 Sea Knight this morning and it looks superb in the box.Following with interest.
Dermo245
Hey everyone and here's the latest on this.. Before and After pic of the scratchbuilt stuff for the main cabin.. And test fitted in place..will weather the floor a little as looks way too clean. Also did some work on the cabin ceiling, with a cable for the hoist and the start of what hopefully will resemble a rescue basket.. Cheers, Dermot

Dermo245
Good progress Dermot, are the doors able to be posed open and if so are you going to? shame to loose all those goodies from view. Thank you and yes, the main cabin door and one of the side windows will be open for a glimpse of the inside...small space though! I built a wee rescue basket for the cabin and thought it looked ok if a little underscale until I saw it on the camera Macro setting - looks like a cattle grid But when inside the cabin, it's only in the background.. And with the other fuselage half on, you only see part of it which is probably ok but I do think it makes the cabin look busier.. And all closed up which I'm happy with. Next up will be seams and filling - I have discovered a few 'steps' where one part of the fuselage half doesn't quite meets the other side fully flat, so to speak - anyone got tips on how to get rid of these? Would be much appreciated! That's it for this evening, thanks for looking. All the best, Dermot

Dermo245
Finally, the weather got a bit milder here so it was off to the garage for some white paint (Halfords from a can) After drying, I wasn't that happy with the finish on the top of the engine section so sanded that back and did it again. It was my own fault for not taking my time with it the first time. Then spent this evening masking up for the Coastguard Red. Trying to mask across the curves was a challenge. And then to paint....eeek! I'm a brush painter so it was two coats of Vallejo Model Color 'Vermillion' which I think is a good match for that colour the Coasties use. I added a little flow improver to help it brush smoothly. There's a little bit of creep/bleed in some places but nothing that can't be fixed and overall, am really happy how it turned out. Will let it cure tomorrow while I enjoy a day of rugby - c'mon Ireland! Thanks for looking. Dermot

stevej60
Word of warning Dermot,I,ve had a nightmare time with my H34 decals for the French fancy GB which is not uncommon for Hobbyboss, they stick as soon as they hit the surface are very brittle and I would suggest cutting larger ones into smaller pieces where possible,it may be yours will be OK but my Sea knight sheet looks like trouble as well.

Thanks for the heads up and absolutely agree with your assessment - stick on contact and very brittle! I also tidied up the black paint around the cockpit and happy with how that's looking now. Starting to come together at last and hope to get the decals finished tonight. Cheers, Dermot Edited April 3, 2015 by Dermo245
jean
Hi Dermot, this Jayhawk is looking fantastic. I am impressed with your brush painting skills! Please tell me more about this flow improver. Cheers JR
Dermo245
Hi Dermot, this Jayhawk is looking fantastic. I am impressed with your brush painting skills! Please tell me more about this flow improver. Cheers JR Thanks Jean. I invested in some good quality paintbrushes a couple of years back- they have a broad flat brush and i think are originally meant for artists oils (but they work great on modelling acrylics) I mostly use Revell acrylics and make sure the paint is well mixed and thinned. The acrylic flow improver/flow retarder can be found in most art supplies shops - basically it's a bit like a thinner and stops the paint drying out too quickly (like while you're brushing) and reduces any brush marks. I guess it's all about practice really...and building more models! Cheers, Dermot

Dermo245
Thanks all and finished her up last night. Will post some more pics over in RFI. Damn camera highlighted a couple of small 'fixes' so will get to those! I'm not sure if the shade of Orange i've used is 100% accurate and the camera/light/background probably adds to that....but I think it looks close enough. On the weathering, I added a little to look like she's maybe just back from an Op but not too much as most pics show these to be kept clean. Thanks for looking and all your kind words of support, encouragement and advice! Cheers, Dermot
