ScarecrowJoe
Hey guys! Just thought to share a few pics about my most recent build. I have taken this kit to refresh some of my previous skills and learn new ones to later tackle the Hasbro model. I had review and research the colors and details sinece there are various versions depending on the original size of the model and what movie it appeared in. I also added a few details here and there to make it my own. I plan to light the back engines and perhaps minimal lighting in th cockpit. The Hasbro will be lighted more thoroughly and combine leds and fiber optics. In this model Im using small powerful magnets to make the ship easily to assemble its main big parts without glue so I can take it appart in case some problems with the internal lights occur. So far the cockpit and the two upper amd lower plates where the cannons rest are completely assembled with magnets. (check pics) I shaved the side walls to make it more accurate to the movie props, added a few greeblies but nothing crazy. Here is my first weathering job which came up a tad heavy since my previous experience was with military kits. I ended up redoing it. IMG_1995-Edit by nenekinkin, on Flickr IMG_1967-Edit by nenekinkin, on Flickr The interior was mostly completely scratchbuilt since the original from the kit mostly suck. 20141231_145559 by nenekinkin, on Flickr Correct weathering started and some battle damage IMG_4727-Edit by nenekinkin, on Flickr IMG_4754 by nenekinkin, on Flickr IMG_4743 by nenekinkin, on Flickr More washes and weathering IMG_4933 by nenekinkin, on Flickr IMG_4929 by nenekinkin, on Flickr These pieces were completely done without any details by the kit but I added the armor plates using...cardboard! Sealed the cardboard and put them one by one like building a small puzzle. Before and after 20150131_154731 by nenekinkin, on Flickr Sealed and painted...then into place 20150206_155856 by nenekinkin, on Flickr Discovered the use of woman makeup (camouflage makeup) and continued the weathering. ScarecrowJoe
Started the downside hull. At last it is starting to look like the mighty Falcon. 20150222_143547 by nenekinkin, on Flickr 20150222_143559 by nenekinkin, on Flickr 20150222_182858 by nenekinkin, on Flickr 20150222_182939 by nenekinkin, on Flickr Hope some of you like it although I know this board is not too science fiction oriented.
spruecutter96
That looks very cool, indeed, my friend. I had this kit a few years ago, but the build looked to be more than I really wanted to commit to (I know, I'm a wuss....!) Thanks very much for sharing. Your weathering skills are very impressive. Keep up the good work. Chris.

Dermo245
Great work and makes me want to dig my half built MPC kit from the attic! How much did you shave the sidewalls by? Look forward to more pics. All the best Dermot
ScarecrowJoe
Thanks Dermot. I frankly eyeballed the sidewalls until they looked more like the film prop, using reference I found over the net. Thanks for looking! Madmonk
For the old MPC kit that is looking very nice. Great paint job. Cheers, Warren
ScarecrowJoe
Another boring update! LOL!Completed the underside canon and canopy along with corresponding weathering and battle damage.20150301_181856 by nenekinkin, on Flickr20150301_181921 by nenekinkin, on FlickrFitted both halves. The MPC Falcon is legendary for its poor overall fitment so it required lots of work. They are not glued yet.20150301_182856 by nenekinkin, on Flickr20150301_182912 by nenekinkin, on FlickrAlso completed detail and weathering of the center area between the front mandibles.20150301_165751 by nenekinkin, on Flickr20150301_165922 by nenekinkin, on FlickrNow I will start to design the posterior engine area for the subsequent LED placement and electrical installation.
ScarecrowJoe
Another little update: Found my LEDS and build the grill following the design of the original ship. A translucent plastic is placed between the LEDS and the grill to make the light as close as the look of the original. ScarecrowJoe
Final look of rear LEDS was reached. ScarecrowJoe
Rearranged the electronics inside and worked a bit to minimize inside reflections. When the LEDS receive the full 12V the light gets very intensive! 20150321_003554 by nenekinkin, on Flickr 20150321_003903 by nenekinkin, on Flickr 20150321_003947 by nenekinkin, on Flickr 20150321_004235 by nenekinkin, on Flickr Main hull halves are not glued yet. I also rearranged the LEDS distance from the grill and the frosted clear plastic strip behind to get better light dispersion and less hot spots. Im satisfied with the result as the light output is very similar to the bluish white color seen in the movie.
ScarecrowJoe
Front lights and cabin are in place. Im about to glue the two halves together. 20150323_112608 by nenekinkin, on Flickr 20150323_112632 by nenekinkin, on Flickr Comments welcomed.
ScarecrowJoe
Well in the name of all that is holy...thing is glued and curing. Will recheck in a few days. Wish me luck! We do like it, although some folks might not feel qualified enough to comment It's down to the SF guys to make this section great... hell, even I'm doing an SF build at the moment! ...as further proof, this Moderator will be getting one of the new Revell MF kits when they arrive, and will most certainly build it. Madmonk
Well for someone who likes to think he knows a thing or two about Sci-Fi and LEDs that is an excellent result, particularly with that pig of a kit. The engine lighting is great, definitely better with the LEDs moved back. Cheers, Warren

The engine lighting is great, definitely better with the LEDs moved back. Cheers, Warren It was one of the worst fitting kits I have assembled, specially the cockpit area. Nothing fitted and I needed to fill, sand, refill, add plastic etc....a nightmare. Next the side walls counter-intuitive way of assembling and, of course the poor fit. I shaved them to more film accurate looks and added details both of these actions made the fit even worse! Thank God for Tamiya extra thin cement and the loads of clamps I happened to own. The detail on it was very good IMO, it could be improved but good nevertheless. Lighting was the easiest part for me. On and off I took a year completing it, working mainly on weekends and when work allowed. It was a good exercise in refreshing old knowledge and skills as well as acquiring new ones. Now, will wait for the DeAgostini MF and will make that as good as I can. Thanks guys!
ScarecrowJoe
Well this is my next project....not scifi This is a reissued model from the 70's and early 80's. I first bought it in the early eighties when I was 13 to 14 years old. I never could finished it and got so frustrated that I just put it in the box and dumped it into my closet. Years later in a house clean up it was discarded.... When MPC reissued it I had to have it. This is the one who got away. I was heavily into military modeling and tried my hand building it. It was a very difficult kit in fact it is recommended to advanced modelers...I dont knoe if Im "advanced" but will try it again. Its not going to be black and the decals will not be used. Im planning on doing a little diorama. When I finish this will tackle the DeAgostini Falcon. 20150327_145025 by nenekinkin, on Flickr
