1/72 Airfix Hawker Typhoon 1B - "Silver Bullet"

Recommended Posts

I present my first model started and completed this year. I wasn't feeling very inspired by the kit supplied schemes, but then came across the intriguing "Silver Bullet" while browsing through the Airfix Model World supplement on the Typhoon. This was MN666, which after being damaged during the Normandy campaign after D-Day was shipped back to Britain, fixed up, stripped of its paint, except for the rudder, and then used by instructors at the Fighter Leader School. I got some very helpful background from Chris Thomas (http://www.britmodel...+silver +bullet). Completed as she may have looked in 1944. Brush painted Tamiya acrylics. Really enjoyed the build, wasn't intending it to be a quick build but that is how it turned out Must get some more of these for the stash. Build thread can be found here. Thanks for looking.

Like that and nice to see a different scheme :goodjob:

Brush painted Tamiya Acrylics? Well done, I have I have a stack of them but find them really hard to use with a hairy stick.

Very nice Tiffie indeed! I have a general question - why do so many modellers on this site brush-paint? Is it the cost and/or smell of the airbrush, or do some modellers find it more satisfying to brush-paint? I ask this because I gave up brush-painting anything larger than a 1/72nd scale instrument panel many years ago (I airbrush almost everything now), and am rather rubbish at brush-painting large pieces, unless you like to see heavy brush strokes as with an old Dutch Masters' oil painting.

Regards,

Jason

Thanks for the kind comments everyone.

Jason, I can only answer for myself but essentially it is because I don't really have the appropriate space to set aside for it, as well as a bit of trepidation that it may be beyond my abilities. I do most of my modelling on the kitchen counter - not the best place for a spray booth. Maybe when the kids have grown up and left home I might experiment with it.

Simon, this is a great model! And your brush work is excellent! There is no harm in improving brush painting skills, be it by necessity or taste.

I would like to get an air brush, but I don't know if I will have the patience to spend most of my spare time cleaning the damn thing... It may just learn to fly one day...

Great Typhoon, especially the NMF

Simon L and Jean's answers cover my main reasons for sticking to brush painting, plus cost and faff; I like just being able to drag my Humbrol painting station out of the garage, put it down on the kitchen table and set to work when I feel like it, even if only for a quarter of an hour of a Sunday morning. I get the impression that airbrushing would require me to be a bit more disciplined.
