Land Rover Wolf TUM FFR Radio Fits - Questions from a Novice

I'm hoping that the experts can give me a clearer picture of the radio equipment which would be carried by the current Land Rover Wolf TUM.

Am I correct in thinking that they were initially fitted with Clansman which has now been superseded by Bowman, for both types is there a standard equipment fit or would the number and type of "boxes" carried vary depending on the individual vehicle's operator and its role?

When was Clansman finally withdrawn from service?

Are TUAAM boxes only used with Clansman or are they also used by Bowman?

I have found some pictures of WMIK Land Rovers fitted with radio aerials; would these vehicles carry a full radio fit or simply a man-portable radio carried in a daysack or similar?

Hi mate,

There are a few different fits for Bowman, the most common are the simple and complex fits. Then you go into RRB or rebro fit. The majority of the kit is plug in and plug out with everything being controlled together in the complex fit by a box of tricks known as the BNAU. HQ fit dets carry a printer and somewhere for the operator to sit but have a different display unit to the simple fits. Clansman was phased out from the Royal School of Signals whilst I was an instructor there 2005-2008, however I believe it had been with the field units prior to that. The TUAAM units were removed on introduction of Bowman as the majority of that black magic is done from inside the vehicle now, maybe by the AAC or coupler? I am not as well versed on CNR as I should be as until 2008 I was a Ptarmigan operator and have been dodging Bowman ever since! As far as I know the UOR stuff has a simple fit for the radio kit, mounts for securing the manpack stuff and built in connection for the antennas. Sorry I can't help much mate, I can however ask those Bowman gurus at work if you need to know more?

Unfortunately as Acky says it can be a bit difficult to pin down as kit can be changed to fit specific ops that a vehicle might require. Bowman vehicle platforms come in a few guises: No Harness, Simple Harness, Basic Functional LAS, Reduced Functional LAS and Full Functional LAS. WMIKs likely to be NH or maybe SH, so will have 1 or 2 radios respectively probably clip in manpacks. Kit and capability goes up exponentially up to FFL which are command vehicles attached to a HQ that have all the bells and whistles - VHF, HF, UHF High Capacity Data Radio, User Display Teminals, printers, telephone exchange, Vehicle External Distribution System which allow other vehicles and systems (eg SATCOM, trunking, LAN etc) to be linked to one another.... Plus all the connecting boxes and cables etc, rather more complicated than Clansman! Well that's part of what I can remember anyway, been a while and not involved anymore.. If you were trying to model a TUM as a FFL unless you can get detailed photos (which is probably unlikely) would be very difficult to get it realistic, a WMIK or just a bog standard TUM somewhat easier!

Thank you for your answers - partly inspired by Dad203's Chieftain tank I'm planning to build one of Accurate Armour's Land Rover kits, any radio equipment would be hidden in the rear of the cab so I should be able to build something representative.

Not in a Land rover but this was my old Clansman fit in a AFV 436, the radio sets are 2x 353(VHF) and 1x 321(HF) top left for the HF set and next to it

it gives you an idea of what the sets looked like. Bowman although was being trialled during my time never actually came in

before I left so I can't help you. :-(

I left the Corps in 2000 and we still used Clansman although we had a system called Panther in a few wagons it wasn't widely used. I believe that

it was part of the Bowman range but not adopted as Bowman is today?
