Next one, P-40E/ Kittyhawk Mk.1A

Recommended Posts

Found this in my stash and looking a bit wanting! Very early Hasegawa release and lid type of boxing! True Details resin cockpit set for this and will have a go at using those Sky decals as illustrated at top of my first entrant.

Are you converting it? I thought the P-40E and Kittyhawk III were in fact different types, was I mislead?

Maybe I got my mark number wrong for it. It should be 1A.

As you can maybe make out its in a sandy pink colour. Looks a bit see through held up to the light but haven't examined it thoroughly yet as its still sealed in its cellophane bag with the decals. The box base is showing signs of foxing but still pretty sound since around 1972 ish when I first got it!

Right then. Now my RCAF Ventura is out the way, time to get back and get on with this one. Emptied the cellophane packet to find something I haven't seen in ages in kits:
IMG_7243_zps06fb5475.jpg
Take a close look at the head rest end of the cockpit opening and then....
IMG_7245_zpsde6295c7.jpg
... the bottom wing halves at the leading edges! Short moulding! No dramas! Its an easy fix, just a bit of thought on how to tackle them.
IMG_7246_zpsc21266f3.jpg
Top wing part glued in place revealing the extent of the anomaly.
IMG_7248_zps43fd67b9.jpg
...And the fuselage held together dry fitted, showing the head rest fault line.
IMG_7249_zpsda7c602c.jpg
Some fault line, but as I said not a major issue.
IMG_7244_zpsf0fabc35.jpg
Meanwhile, the True Details resin cockpit primed. Don't know what ever happened to this US aftermarket company. They seem to have shut shop? Some time ago too I recall.
IMG_7251_zps997eaded.jpg
All painted up and ready for trimming and fitting.
IMG_7253_zps539fdcbb.jpg
Found some ancient scraps of plastic card to use for the re build of the faulty area. Seeing as one side (portside) was sound, it was a good base for butting up the scrap plastic.
IMG_7254_zps35ffa6f9.jpg
From the rear side. Note another smaller piece to fill the small void behind the bigger piece.
IMG_7257_zps6683eac5.jpg
Here, you can see the repair starting to take shape.
IMG_7260_zps65f29056.jpg
Before doing any more to the repair, the cockpit tub is prepared for fitting.
IMG_7256_zps756342f2.jpg
A view from below. Here you can see I added a spare headrest(grey coloured plastic) that came from the P-40N build I finished recently. It added to the strength and support of the scrap plastic splicing.
IMG_7261_zpsec76c280.jpg
Another view of the 'tub' from the other side...
IMG_7263_zps4ef0faf2.jpg
... and the story so far.

But I couldn't stop last night and was on a roll so I did more:
IMG_7264_zps0f8e8f51.jpg
Seeing as the repair had hardened enough, I set about completing the shaping of the headrest area. I also removed the kit moulded headrest as it would be difficult to replicate the original. I'll make a whole new one to replace it.
IMG_7265_zpsca97bd78.jpg
From the other side. The tub is also fixed in place all nice and snug.
IMG_7255_zpsbd139545.jpg
Meanwhile work carried on with the wing while all the other work was setting. Another roughly cut piece of plastic card glued into the opening left by the bad moulding.
IMG_7258_zpsa3cf0aac.jpg
....and another smaller, roughly shaped piece stuck to the other and blended in with some filler and a sand down cleanup saw to the fault. On the other wing, which was much less of a fault, some filler was added and smoothed up leaving a perfect wing!
So tonight, I'm going to add the resin gunsight and prepare for fitting the wings and tailplanes and then prepare it all for some priming.
Cheers.

PS Another background quiz: In the last photo, What, whose and when will I reveal it??

Pics tonight, but only a little bit done. Cutaway the odd shaped gunsight and replaced it with the KMC resin one that vastly improves the look. Fitted the seat and finished the wing repairs where the short moulding occured. Hopefully I'll get the priming done and peruse the Sky Decals sheet and choose a finish for it.

Just a couple pics from last night. Wings and tailplanes fitted----and a very good too! Plus the resin seat and gunsight that can just be made out.

IMG_7266_zps6b325c9a.jpg

Still need to make a new headrest before closing up this area.

Not sure how much I'll get done this evening. Other serious things happening away from modelling.

Cheers.

A little bit from this evening. Found a bit of scrap plastic for the head rest. It may well not be right but its going to have to do. Its one of those tiny discs of sprue found attached to parts while on sprue and was thin enough and the right size for my needs.

IMG_7282_zpse112d0c1.jpg
Canopy fixed in place and undercart all fitted in readiness for priming. Once the clear part is masked of course.

That has been an oldie but goldie swiftly dealt with! And it is scrubbing rather well.

Good show all round!

Getting back into this slowly after all the trauma of lasst Saturday. Did some priming and masking:

IMG_7284_zpse6d1c3be.jpg

..to get to this stage.

I don't believe in using lashings of expensive Tamiya tape for areas like this and seen in some modelling magazines. Good ole cheap tape from local hardware store is perfectly adequate!

IMG_7287_zps47ded673.jpg

Some masking on the way of being removed....

IMG_7288_zps45ae6cef.jpg

... and my slightly unusual choice. Found pics and a few details of my chosen subject in the Osprey Aces book dealing with RAF and Commonwealth P-40 aces. My one will be the one with the red white checked rudder.

Last few pics of WIP.

Decals all in place and pre weathering....

....Also waiting on prop...

..... and wheels.

IMG_7310_zpsd7cc2ed4.jpg

Suitably matted down in two tones. I based this on the available photos to me in the Osprey book Commonweakth P-40 Aces. They show darker areasa and lighter areas with the reoalcement engine covers in different paintwork. Not sure about the starboard side soI left as is, seen below....

IMG_7311_zps02007bf6.jpg

Did most of the weathering this evening and the top two pics here from a couple nights ago. By the way, the lightened faded look was achieved by adding a few dots of white paint into my W&N matt varnish thinned with W&N acrylic flow improver.

IMG_7312_zpsf9b33cac.jpg

First of the completed model. I attempted to represent the overspray of the yellow on the roundel with mid stone. Again. not certain about the other side due to lack of evidence so I left it alone. The rest of the finished work in the gallery. See you there!

Just discovered something. The 'Eddie' Edwards who flew FZ-R in the desert as a sergeant pilot, is the same 'Stocky' Edwards of the Northern Europe campaign flying Spitfires and became a Wing Commander ! His personalised Spits coded JFE should ring a few bells.

Yep, same man, one of the greatest allied pilots of the war, IMO. His record speaks for itself; one of the few men to have his score increased by postwar research.
