Revell RF-4E Phantom II 1/72

Recommended Posts

Hi, here is my Recce – Phantom from the german Luftwaffe. It was one of the aircrafts from “AG 52″ that took part in the NATO exercise ” Best Focus 82″ in Karup, Denmark.
There is a special painting on the fin.
The Revell kit suffer from flaws on it s outlines, canopy too low, nose too slim, intakes
too wide, but they are cheap and go very well together, the Hasegawa kit is also not perfect and expensive !
If you look inside the intakes, there are the engines, the cockpit is great for this scale as well the wheel wells. The surfaces are deeper engraved than Hasegawa s, but petite !
The Phantom is one of my favorite Jet airfcraft and like most legendary aircrafts, their are
a lot of nice and interesting schemes.
The kit is Revell, the decals came from Airdoc ( markings and stencils seperate ), the colour is Xtra colours, but self mixed with others to match the camo shades better.
It is not my best kit, but the photo session, outside, came out nice, i managed to damage the tailplane, it hangs in the false angle, you will notice it ! The aft canopy refuses still to sit in the same angle as the pilots one

Some of the pics were edited, while playing with the Photo Bucket functions
I hope you like it anyway

Bernd

Thank you very much, the Airdoc decals are really nice but you have to buy the needed stencils on an extra sheet. A Phantom without stencils will probably look a bit "off"

The stencinls are not single ones but come in larger parts, took hours too.

Hi Bernd,

great to see another of your models presented here! Have a soft spot for Phantoms myself and should I ever build a german F4, I would choose that Norm72 camo, too. Absolutely the best looking dress for german Phantoms!

Never built a Revell F4, although I have a lot of Phantoms in the collection and some more kits in the stash (Monogram, Esci, Italeri, Hasegawa and Fujimi).

The paintwork looks very good and decaling all these stencils must have been a very time-consuming task! Did you use acrylics or enamels?

Have a nice weekend

Mario

Hi Mario, thank you very much, i love the F-4. The Revell Phantoms have some flaws as described, maybe some more but they look the part and they are cheap, maybe you give one of them a go. One of my stalled projects is a Revell F-4F up/or down graded to be an early E. Will do this one as a Vietnam aircraft. The decaling consumed a lot of time but you will rewarded with a highly detailed surface.

At some time i hope i will add more Luftwaffe F-4s to mycollection, the Norm 72 is, as you said the best looking one.

I am using both types of colors, it works and i am using what is at hand.

The Monogram Phantoms are really nice kits, nowadays hard to get, in terms of accuracy and shape maybe the best.

Have a nice WE too and happy modelling

I love the phantom in this scheme and you've done a great job on this Bernd.

Stencilling is the work of the devil so you have my admiration for that alone!

Chris

Thank you very much, Chris, this one was started some time ago and landd for some time in the doom box, because of mistakes in the paint job and to start decaling needed a lot of extra motivation

Love that! F-4's look awsome in german camo.

Dave

Thank you Dave and yes its a very attractive camo with the angled camo edges and the big sized markings, looks much better than nowadays all gray jets

I love this! Excellent Spook, the Norm 72 scheme looks great. I agree, the Revell Phantoms do have some issues but they're such fun to build!

Thanks for this compliment, have a F-4F in the same scheme, its a tad older, will post this one after some touch ups

BTW nice avatar !

A Phabolous Evening :-)

:2c::2c::thumbsup2::thumbsup2::thumbsup2: got to admit being partial to the old splinter scheme.

Thank you very much. The kit was finally finished in early 2014. The pics were done in summer.

While editing the pics i found some glitches are still in the paint work, the eye of the camera is not always my friend :banghead:

Hi Bernd,

the flaw I know about the Revell Phantom is the flat canopy. It can be well hidden, like in your case, by presenting it in opened position.

I´m really looking forward to your Vietnam era Phantom build. Does the kit include separate slats and short cannon fairing? The main reason, I never bought the Revell kit was my already too high stash that makes me reluctant buying more kits. Also don´t like the fact that there are always decal options with colorful jubilee markings, which forces you to buy aftermarket decals.

Speaking of Monogram´s D and J Phantoms: Built a lot of them in the eighties and still have a "Tour of Duty" F-4D with Steve Ritchie decal sheet in the stash. Found they looked even better than the Fujimi F-4s. Difficult to understand why Revell never re-released these kits (same with the F-105G).

Cheers,

Mario

Hi Mario, i dislike the special markings in Revells boxes like you. The RF-4E version had a very nice special marking but i like to build the "normal" ones.

My F-4E had the same slats as the later F-4E/Fs its depicted on the fist side in the Squadron in Action volume, the shorter gun barrel was a thing between me and my cutter/sanding stick, very easy to do.Some of the paint work is on, used for some parts a brush to get the hard edged SEAC camo look right.

The slatted tailplane will come from a Fujimi F-4E which decided to fall out of my hand while dusting it ( what a nice play of words :D )

Some days ago, i recovered the kit from my doom box and hope i can finish it soon.

The decals come from Modeldecals, bought from Aero Spezial and the stencils will be from PrintScale ( hope they work)

The Monogram F-4 kits were re released by Accurate Miniatures some time ago but never from Revell as the F-105. From time to time there is an offering on E... .

Cheers

Hi Bernd!!!!!

W O W, W O W, W O W, W O W!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I love this plane since I have seen the Thunderbirds show with them in 1969 and 1973 here in my country.....a REAL WONDEFUL experience of feeeling those great power demostration overhead!!!!

I am thinking that you, Uncle MArio and me all have nearly the same stash.....I have nearly all those birds in 1/72 as you: Fujimi, Hasegawa Old and New, Monogram, ESCI, Italeri, HAwk, Lindberg, Matchbox, Old Revell ones, and even the Monogram/Revell Snap Tite one who BTW is a nice kit to work.

Congratulations for the very very well done job!!!!

I liked a huge lot this nice Phantom in German Dress, and the detail level you have put in her, with all those data included, really makes my hands itch to take one of them and begin to build, but have to watch what is started and hope to finish one in time to share with you.

BTW, a good friend of mine went to Europe in 2002 and as those outstanding Revell of Germany Phantom kits haven't crossed the pond to my country, asked him to bring me one F4F and one RF in german markings and bought each variant one for him and one for me in a store there in Berlin. He doens't speaks german and the store owner didn't speak English, and he told me had to make the deal with signs and big smiles!!!!

Thank you very much for sharing,

Cheers!!!!

Thanks for this massive compliment, my friend :-) !

To see the Thunderbirds with their F-4Es must be an impressive sight !!! The last F-4F i ve seen was a few years back, a "Rotte" of two Luftwaffe F-4s were roaring over my head, low on deck, while i was outside. After a curve on the horizont, they came back and again right over me making a roll. After they were gone the big plume of black smoke standing in the sky, what a sight (and sound)

The kit was more or less out of the box, i think thats o.K in 1/72,the paint work and the immense decaling do the job quite well, maybe some seat belts could be added.

Sadly i didn t have Revell kits in my shop, comunication will be easy, it seems my english is to understand. I ever thought RoG supply the whole world with plastic.

The Italeri kit, you have mentioned are quite nice too, good shape and a petite surface. Give it a try, you can t have enough Spooks in your collection, will post the F-4F and the Hasegawa F-4N at some time here too.

Thank you very much for your reply

Cheers

Bernd :)

Thank you very much for this compliment, Stix. For the decal job you need absolute calmness all around you, but the decals from Airdoc are really nice and you CAN read the stencils in this scale.

After they were on, i must confess i made a slight overspray to tone them a bit down, a bit too hefty.

For some years i have done mostly WWII fighter planes in 1/48. It was a good feeling to switch back to 1/72 and do jets after a long break. The Phantom is probably my favorite jet and there is more to come:

In the Works:

Phantom FGR.2 1/48 again an oob build with decals from Airdoc

F-4E 1/72 the mentioned Vietnam fighter bomber based on a Revell F-4F

On the to do pile

Hasegawa F-4E(J) 1/72

Academy F-4B/N 1/48 with VF-84 markings

Tamiya F-4J 1/32 (oh well)

Revell RF-4C (E) (we will see)

Both 1/32 kits need a lot of stuff

A very nice evening and happy modelling

Hi Bernd,

Great looking recce Phantom, may I ask you what paints you did use to get such a nice match for the Norm 72 scheme?

Best regards,

Ronald

Hi Ronald, thank you very much. For the camo scheme i have used Xtra colors. They have a wide range of Bundeswehr/Luftwaffe colors and they match the real colors quite good ( i am a bit color blind, so don t ask me about greens and browns, they are all "breen" for me :crosseyed: )

Cheers

Bernd I understand this completely! I am something of a Phantom obsessive - I love the Fujimi kits for a start in 1:72 and the Revell/Hasegawa/Eduard/Academy in 1:48! Last year I went to Gatow and sat for ages looking at the immaculate Luftwaffe Phantom. It was 28 degrees that day and there was only me and another German guy there and we had the place to ourselves - fabulous it was.

Chris, its a shame, that i wasn t there so far. Hopefully the aircraft presented outdoors will be saved. And you can t have too many F-4s

The Academy kit rides high on my to build list, i hope it lands soon on my bench.

Thank you very much for your input, did you made photos in Gatow?

Hi Bernd - I haven't tried the Academy kit yet but it is sat starting at me. I've been busy with my second F100 since finishing the Uboat. In fact the Uboat is all people want to look at!

I had a great day at Gatow although I got off the bus too earlier so it took me some time and some appalling attempts at German to find it. However it was worth it - a mind blowing collection of Cold War jets and I took hundreds of photos which I would be happy to share.

I then spent three wonderful days in Berlin for my brothers 'stage do'!

Your sub deserves a lot of good feedback, its an impressive build, i guess a similar well done F-100 will attract a lot of attention too, i am not always here, did i miss this ???

We live in a relative small town, i was twice in Berlin and i guess i would have a lot of problems to get there too, Maybe the people in Berlin didn t understand me anyway.

I would love to see some pics of your visit.

Cheers

Bernd
