What scale?

I suddenly have the urge to build another ship, and initially looked at the Trumpeter 1/350 Udaloy II Admiral Chabanenko #04531, which I really like the look of. To date I've done 1/72, 1/144 and 1/350, but never anything modern.

… but then my eye strayed to 1/200 scale and I looked at the Trumpeter 1/200 #03612 or #03613 Sovremennys. Although I’ve read some nice comments about these two kits I’ve also heard some awful comments about some of the 1/200 Sovremenny kits being hugely inaccurate?

Any thoughts?

Also, does anyone know the rough difference in physical size between the two scales for this size of ship – 1/200 might just be a step too far to find space to display it.

Even the 1:200 Sovremenny is quite a big model, but still quite manageable. I've not heard that it is that inaccurate, although the turrets might be slightly off. I wouldn't worry about it too much as it's a nice kit to build. Unfortunately with the demise of WEM the etch sets and resin turrets are no longer available, at least until Toms Modelworks start to re-releasd them.

On my return to modelling I had a go at a Trumpy 1/350 Tribal, crisp mouldings, builds well, big enough to work for my fat fingers but does not make a huge model. I struggled a bit with my first attempts at PE. Kit boats are not correct and the main deck guardrails are missing so you would need some AM if it was an issue for you. I have a Trumpy T23 in the stash, looks good in the box, also the Trumpy 'Z' destroyers seem to build well looking at RFI's on forums. Consider how much work you want to do to complete a kit, don't get bogged dowm with a project that is to big and does not get finished.

Hi

I am straying a little off topic here, but does anyone know where I can pick up a cheap Trumpeter USS Missouri 1/200 kit? The seem to retail around £250-300 and as I live in the channel islands the postal cost on top pushes me closer to the £350. I have seen a few reviews of people saying they have picked them up for closer to £200 but I've been hunting a while and have got nowhere near that figure yet... Just wondered if I was missing something? Thanks in advance :)

I would imagine the question about which scale is all about the amount of kits you wish to build and the room available.  If you are an avid builder and collector and build lots then 1:700 scale.  If just a few, with the added extra detail, then 1:350 is a very good scale.  If, on the other hand, you only plan to build one or two and wish to to get the best detail for display then 1:200 or even 1:144 scale is the way to go.  As with most things, it is can be quality v quantity.

My scale, to obtain the most detail but small enough to have half a dozen or so on display shelves is currently 1:350 scale; however my problem is availability and affordability.   I'm sure that I am not the only one that doesn't always want to build the big battleships (much like every aircraft modeller doesn't always want to build Spitfires and Messerschmitts) and so availability of what I want to build is usually non-existent.   As such, I have to resort to scratchbuilding the models I want to build but I'm not all that good at it yet.  I am improving as I go along, usually by trial and error.

The image below shows some 1:350 scale models I have under construction.  As you can see, the scale of 1:350 is just about right due to the size they take up.
